New Zealand vs West Indies 1st T20 Betting Tips, Preview & Odds – Guptill to lead Black Caps to victory

  • New Zealand play West Indies in the 1st T20 of a 3-match series on Friday
  • Kane Williamson and Colin de Grandhomme are not in the Black Caps T20 squad
  • West Indies are ranked 9th in the world for T20 cricket

West Indies will face New Zealand at Eden Park in the 1st T20 of the three-match series. New Zealand will see this as an opportunity to get back to winning ways after suffering an unfortunate series defeat to India last time out.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand’s T20 form has been poor on paper but their performances have been anything but poor. In the Black Caps last series they lost 5-0 to India but two of those losses came in a Super Over. The others were also reasonably close encounters.

The last match of that series took place in early February 2020. India scored 163 runs batting first in Mount Maunganui. Tim Seifert and Ross Taylor led the charge with 50 and 53 runs respectively, but the Black Caps fell seven runs short on 156 runs.

Correcting this run of defeats will be paramount to New Zealand going into this series.

New Zealand Team News

New Zealand all rounder Colin de Grandhomme has been ruled out of the series while spin bowler, Ajaz Patel will miss the 1st T20. Kane Williamson will not feature in the T20 series.

West Indies Form

West Indies have won their last three T20 matches, the last of which was played on 6 March 2020. Those three victories have however come against Sri Lanka (twice) and Ireland.

The Windies bowled first in their last match against Sri Lanka in Pallekele and restricted the hosts to 155 runs in their 20 overs.

In response the West Indies cruised home by seven wickets with three overs to spare. Brandon King and Shimron Hetmyer scored 43 runs each while Andre Russell smashed 40 from 14 balls.

West Indies Team News

All rounder Andre Russell is not in the West Indies squad after making himself unavailable. Much will depend on the up and coming stars in Shimron Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran to score the runs.

New Zealand vs West Indies Head to Head

New Zealand have won three of their last four completed T20 matches against the West Indies. Their last match was in January 2018 when New Zealand won comfortably by 119 runs in Mount Maunganui.

New Zealand vs West Indies Odds

New Zealand are favourites at $1.66 with West Indies offering odds of $2.20 bet365.

Martin Guptill can be backed at $3.50 in the best batsman market for New Zealand. Shimron Hetmyer is the favourite to be the Windies best batsman at $4.50.

New Zealand vs West Indies Match Up

New Zealand are a very consistent T20 team while the West Indies remain the mavericks of the game. West Indies have players who can produce some sublime individual performances but they just as often collapse. Dealing with New Zealand conditions could also be a challenge for the visitors.
