England and Australia renew rivalries when they get a three-match series underway with the 1st T20 at the Rose Bowl on Friday. Australia’s lack of game time in recent months gives England an edge as they come of a series draw with Pakistan.

England Form

England drew their most recent series 1-1 with Pakistan. The first T20 was rained out before England won the second but the visitors levelled matters in final T20.

Pakistan batted first in the 3rd T20 and scored 190 runs in their 20 overs. Tom Banton scored 46 runs to get England off to a fine start but those around him couldn’t get going. Moeen Ali later smashed 61 runs but it was too little too late s England fell 5 runs short at Old Trafford.

England Team News

England have strengthened their squad with Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer and Mark Wood returning. All three are likely to feature in the opening T20. Opening batsman Jason Roy remains out injured.

Australia Form

Australia have won nine of their last 10 completed T20 matches with their last series ending in a 2-1 victory over South Africa in January 2020. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, that was the last time Australia played T20 international cricket.

With the series tied at 1-1 Australia smashed their way to 193 runs batting first at Newlands. David Warner scored 57 runs while Aaron Finch contributed 55 runs. The Aussies then bowled South Africa out for a meager 96 runs to win by 97 runs.

Having spent six months with no T20 cricket Australia can be expected to be a bit rusty in the opening fixture.

Australia Team News

Australia arrive in England a full strength squad and will likely go with their best side to start the series. Youngsters Riley Meredith, Josh Philippe and Daniel Sams will most probably only get a run later in the tour.

England vs Australia Head to Head

Australia hold a 3-2 advantage over England in their last five T20 matches. England won their last meeting by 28 runs at Edgebaston in 2018.

England vs Australia Odds

England are priced at $1.72 to win the opening game with Australia at $2.10. Jos Buttler is the favourite to be England’s best batsman at $3.50 while Aaron Finch and David Warner are both paying $3.75 in the same market for Australia.

England vs Australia Match Up

Lack of game time will be Australia’s biggest concern heading into the 1st T20 but they have an experienced squad to call upon. England’s weakness in the last series was their bowling but that should improve with Sam Curran, Jofra Archer and Mark Wood back in the squad.

England vs Australia Stats

  • England have won 5 of their last 7 T20 matches.
  • England’s Tom Banton has scored 71, 20 and 46 runs in his last 3 T20 innings’.
  • Australia haven’t played T20 cricket for 6 months.
  • Australia’s David Warner has scored 57 & 67 runs in his last 2 T20 innings’.
