Western Australia are flying high with three wins in their last four matches seeing them rise to the top of the table.

  • New South Wales are yet to win in the Sheffield Shield (D3, L1) (Sheffield Shield)
  • NSW are 17 points short of Western Australia at the top (Sheffield Shield)
  • Western Australia have won three of their four games (D1) (Sheffield Shield)
  • WA are six points clear of Queensland in second (Sheffield Shield)

New South Wales Form

New South Wales have been in good form across their last few matches. A strong win over Tasmania in the One-Day Cup means they come into this clash with some confidence following a battling draw with Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield.

This game against Tasmania saw the side fight to 333 all out. In reply, NSW laboured to 216/7 declared, with Tasmania then frustrating their opponents as they worked their way to 176/2, with the match eventually drawn.

This performance put on full show NSW's struggles with bat and ball. Ben Dwarshuis notched figures of 4/88, while Sean Abbott top scored with 53 from 82 with the bat. While the figures themselves are fairly good, they could neither skittle Tasmania nor keep the quiet with the ball.

Ultimately, the issues NSW have with both bat and ball are hurting them in the Sheffield Shield, with the side now 17 points behind their next opponents in the table.

Western Australia Form

Western Australia have been brilliant of late, and are actually unbeaten across their last 12 matches in all competitions. Their recent One-Day Cup match saw WA squeeze to a two wicket win over South Australia, with a thrilling encounter showing the grit and determination WA boast.

Their last Sheffield Shield match saw WA hammer South Australia by an innings and 28 runs. WA ran through their opponents in their first innings, with Matthew Kelly (5/34) and Lance Morris (4/93) sharing the wickets as they restricted SA to 299.

In reply, Sam Whiteman (193) and Cameron Bancroft (135) battered SA's bowling as the league leaders posted a daunting score of 444 all out. Kelly (4/23) and Morris (3/52) returned to pulverise SA's batsmen, skittling them for 117 to secure a big win.

This triumph meant that WA were able to move onto 24 points from four games, meaning they are six clear of Queensland in second. Another win in this match could see them open up a massive lead over their opponents as they look to nail down the number one spot in the competition.
