The Pakistan Super League starts on 20 February 2020 and runs until 22 March 2020. The Karachi Kings are the favourites to win their first Pakistan Super League, as they have a quality squad at their disposal. The Quetta Gladiators are the defending champions.

The Karachi Kings finally have a squad capable of going all the way in the Pakistan Super League. The side from Karachi have fallen at the semi-final stage of every edition of the Pakistan Super League, so they will feel they are due a crack at the final – and this could very well be their year.

Pakistan international Imad Wasimwill lead the side in 2020, while the likes of Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Mohammad Amir, Alex Hales, Chris Jordan, and Liam Plunkett will all add their own flavor to what is looking like a very strong side.

It is all going to come down to whether the side can get over that mental block of having never made the final of the Pakistan Super League, but their mix of youth and experience will stand them in good stead.

Two-time Pakistan Super League champions Islamabad United will be major competition for Karachi Kings to overcome. Like Karachi Kings, Islamabad United have reached the semi-final stage in every Pakistan Super League tournament – the only difference is that they have gone all the way twice.

They too have a very strong squad. Dale Steyn, Colin Munro, Rassie van der Dussen, Colin Ingram, Luke Ronchi, and Asif Ali are just some of the big names available for the side to utilise, while Shadab Khan is the captain. However, the fitness of star bowler Steyn is always a concern, while the loss of last season’s skipper Mohammad Sami may have a negative impact on the dressing room.

The Lahore Qalanders may have never made a semi-final of the Pakistan Super League, but they are being tipped this year to make a real fist of it thanks to their settled side and mix of experience and youth.

Sohail Akhtar will lead the side in 2020, with Mohammad Hafeez as vice-captain. The pace and growing talent of Shaheen Afridi will be a major asset for the side, while the likes of David Wiese, Salman Butt, Fakhar Zaman, Chris Lynn, and Lendl Simmons all bring an exciting brand of cricket to the franchise.

This could well be the season where Lahore Qalanders make their mark on a tournament they have struggled in, but the likes of the Karachi Kings and Islamabad United will likely be too strong in the end.

It may seem strange to see two previous champions in the outsiders’ column, but given the strength of this year’s tournament, Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators are going to have to play out of their skin to go all the way. They both have strong squads at their disposal, but the consensus is that the tide is turning in the Pakistan Super League. Write these two off at your peril, but it really is going to be a big ask for them to do anything special in 2020.
