Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Rajasthan Royals Qualifier II

With the Kolkata Knight Riders waiting in the grand finale, the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Rajasthan Royals battle it out to be the second finalist of the IPL 2024 campaign. They play Qualifier II at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday evening, IST local time.

One step away from the final, there’s no room for error for Hyderabad and Rajasthan. They have had contrasting paths to this match and will hope to rise to the occasion. I am backing the Sunrisers to start well once again and boss the first six overs.

  • Sunrisers Hyderabad have hit the highest powerplay score in 11 of their last 14 completed matches (IPL)
  • Rajasthan Royals have conceded the most powerplay runs in their last 4 completed matches (IPL)
  • Sunrisers Hyderabad have won their last 2 matches against the Royals (IPL)
  • Sunrisers Hyderabad average 11.49 runs per over in the powerplays, the most for any team this season (IPL)

Head to Head

This will be the 20th match between the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Rajasthan Royals. Of the 19 games played so far, Hyderabad has a slight edge with ten wins.

The sides met earlier in the season at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. The Sunrisers, batting first, made 201 for 3, with Nitish Reddy (76) and Heinrich Klaasen (42) excelling. The Royals nearly chased that out, as Riyan Parag (77) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (67) led the innings for Rajasthan. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the star of the bowling show, with 3 for 41.

Sunrisers Hyderabad Form

The Sunrisers finished the regular season with 17 points and a second spot. That gave them a chance to play in qualifier I, which they lost to the Kolkata Knight Riders by eight wickets.

That defeat was a minor blip, as the Sunrisers have won two of their last three completed matches. With only one win away from a place in the grand final, they would love to get back to their winning groove.

Travis Head (533) and Abhishek Sharma (470) have been key to the Sunrisers, although Head needs to get out of his rut of consecutive ducks. With the ball, Cummins and Natarajan have shared 34 wickets between themselves.

Sunrisers Hyderabad Team News

The Sunrisers could think about their batting composition as Aiden Markram’s absence is being thoroughly felt. They could bring him in place of Vijaykant Viyaskanth, leaving room for an Indian bowler to come into the playing XI.

Rajasthan Royals Form

The Royals missed the chance to finish in the top two after their last league match was abandoned. In fact, they had the same points as the Sunrisers Hyderabad but finished third owing to a poor net run rate.

Rajasthan picked up the pieces quickly and defeated the in-form Royal Challengers Bengaluru by four wickets in Ahmedabad in the eliminator. That victory was their first in five completed matches. The losing streak started with a one-run defeat to Hyderabad.

For the Royals, Riyan Parag (567) continues to be the batting lynchpin. With the ball, Avesh Khan (16) has improved as the season progresses, but questions remain over Yuzvendra Chahal’s recent form.

Rajasthan Royals Team News

The Royals could opt for the same team as in the eliminator unless they want to try an extra spinner.

Verdict

Hyderabad and Rajasthan dished out a very entertaining match earlier in the season. On paper, there’s very little separating these teams, and only by a wafer-thin margin do the Sunrisers have an edge with their powerplay strokes. I am putting my money on the Sunrisers having the best powerplay.
