Kolkata Knight Riders vs Sunrisers Hyderabad Qualifier I

The IPL 2024 playoffs start with the first qualifier between the two best teams from the regular phase, the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will host this match on Tuesday, with the winner getting a place in the final and the loser getting another chance to reach the final through the second qualifier.

There’s very little to separate these teams in terms of top-order stability and big hitting. The Sunrisers may have a small edge, thanks to their recent form, and the Knight Riders have seen their last two matches abandoned. I am putting my money in the sixes market, though, backing the Sunrisers to hit the most match sixes.

  • Sunrisers Hyderabad averaged 12 sixes per match in the regular season (IPL)
  • Sunrisers Hyderabad have hit the most sixes in 9 of their last 13 matches (IPL)
  • Kolkata Knight Riders have conceded the most match sixes in 4 of their last 7 matches against Hyderabad (IPL)

Head to Head

The Kolkata Knight Riders and the Sunrisers Hyderabad have played each other 26 times so far. Of these, there have been 17 wins for Kolkata and nine wins for Hyderabad.

The teams met earlier in the season, in the third game of the regular season. It was a thriller in Kolkata that the Knight Riders won by four runs. Batting first, Kolkata made 208 for 7, with Andre Russell’s late blitz (64 not out off 25 balls) giving them a huge boost. Natarajan took three wickets for the Sunrisers, who gave a spirited fight in the chase, as Klaasen scored 63 off 29 balls but fell short in the end. Harshit Rana (3 for 33) was the star of the tense victory for Kolkata.

Kolkata Knight Riders Form

The Knight Riders were one of the standout teams, booking their playoff spot earlier than everyone else. They finished the group standings at the top with 20 points from nine wins, three defeats, and two abandoned games.

Both their abandoned games came before the playoffs, casting doubt on whether their preparations had been hampered. Interestingly, one of those abandoned games was at this venue.

With Phil Salt out of the squad, Sunil Narine (461 runs) remains Kolkata’s best hope for quick starts. He also excelled with the ball this season, but it has been a collective effort with four bowlers picking 15 wickets each.

Kolkata Knight Riders Team News

Rahmanullah Gurbaz missed out on some game time because of the two lost matches. He should be a straight swap for Phil Salt.

Sunrisers Hyderabad Form

The Sunrisers grabbed everyone’s attention with their aggressive game play. They finished second with eight wins and one match abandoned and had a better run rate than the third-placed Rajasthan Royals, who had the same points.

Hyderabad won three of their last four completed matches and have usually enjoyed the quick starts from Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma. With momentum behind them, they could be a tricky side to face.

Head (533) and Abhishek (467) boss their batting charts, while Natarajan (17 wickets) and Pat Cummins (15) remain their bowling lynchpins.

Sunrisers Hyderabad Team News

With no injury concerns, Hyderabad should retain the same side that played on Sunday.

Verdict

Hyderabad played as recently as Sunday, while Kolkata hasn’t played for nearly ten days. Will that impact the momentum of the teams? It is hard to tell, but both teams will be happy to get a second chance to qualify for the final, even if they lose here. I am backing Hyderabad to score more match sixes.
