Sydney Sixers vs Sydney Thunder Big Bash League Expert Tips
The Sixers will go through to meet the Hurricanes in the BBL14 Final with a narrow win expected against the Thunder on Friday.
It will be the third time these cross-city rivals face off this season with the most recent matchup on 17th January ending in a No Result due to bad weather. The first game was won by the Sixers on the very last ball of the innings.
Once again this game is expected to be close and with all the trends pointing toward the Sixers the choice is an easy one to make. They have not lost to the Thunder in their last 5 matchups with 3 wins and 2 no results. As the home team at the SCG the Sixers have averaged 19.3 fours and 8 sixes per game compared to the Thunder’s 16 fours and 3.8 sixes.
David Warner from the Thunder has the 2nd most runs of any player this season but has scored 0, 22 and 8 in his last 3 games signalling a rut of bad form. Ben Dwarshuis has been in electric form with the ball for the Sixers taking 14 wickets in 10 games, sitting 6th in BBL14 bowling rankings.
What will determine this game is how well the opening batsmen for each team play. The team who’s openers score a combined total of 50+ are almost assured the victory and in my opinion the Sydney Sixers have the stronger lineup.
Take the Sixers to win with the Game total to go Under as well as Unders on 4’s and 6’s. Ben Dwarshuis is tipped to be the pick of the Sixers bowling attack.
- The Sixers have not lost to the Thunder in their last 5 games and own a 18-7 record over them historically. The record at the SCG is 9-2 to the Sixers.
- The Average Game Total Over the last 3 Challenger games is 314.6 runs
- Two of the last 3 Challenger games have been played at the SCG with the number of 4’s and 6’s both being under these totals.
- Fast bowlers have taken 3 times the number of wickets as spinners at the SCG this season.

Sydney Sixers Form
Sydney had the tough task of trying to stop the Hobart Hurricanes in their Qualifier matchup earlier this week. The Sixers won the toss and sent their opponent in to bat with the majority of wins this season in the BBL coming from the team that bats second.
Teams batting first at Bellerive had averaged 164 runs this season so Sydney would have been feeling generally well keeping Hobart to 173 despite it being the second highest first innings total at the ground in BBL14.
The bowling attack struck in the 5th over dismissing the dangerous Mitch Owen but he had already blasted 3 fours and 3 sixes for 36 runs off 15 balls. The Sixers allowed most of the big hitters to get starts and keep the run rate going.
The 2nd innings could not have started worse with opener Josh Philippe going for a duck off the 4th ball of the innings. Jack Edwards followed suit just 4 balls later and the Sixers were reeling at 2-2. The usually reliable Moises Henriques came in to steady things but was also dismissed for 1 run off 5 balls.
Kurtis Patterson remained and forged a partnership with Jordan Silk before Lachlan Shaw took over and the Sixers had the game within reach. Smart bowling decisions by the Hurricanes made it difficult for Sydney to lift the run rate to the required number to snatch the win.

Sydney Thunder Form
The Thunder made it through to the Challenger by beating the rampaging Melbourne Stars in a lightning affected Knockout game on Wednesday. With the track at Engie Stadium having been hard to play all season long the Thunder did what they needed to by controlling the Stars batting innings.
Tom Andrews and Tanveer Sangha both took 2 wickets each with Sangha taking the key wicket of Glenn Maxwell who has been the catalyst for the Stars winning streak. But it was Nathan McAndrew that set the crowd alight taking 5 wickets for just 16 runs to set the record for best figures in a single innings by a Sydney Thunder player.
The first innings got off to a terrible start for the home team with David Warner out for a duck, facing just 2 balls. New opener Hugh Weibgen hit just 11 off 11 after the start of the game was delayed due to lightning in the area.
Oliver Davies topped the scorers for Sydney with 36 while Matt Gikes and Sam Billings both got past 20. Despite the 135 total being the lowest of the season for Sydney they still managed 13 fours and 3 sixes in the battle.
