England vs Australia Third Ashes Test Preview, Tips & Predictions

It is almost make-or-break time for England at home as the Ashes series moves to Headingley this Thursday.

We were robbed of two days of play due to inclement weather at Lord's, which in the end saved the Australians who looked like they were about to be bowled out short of England's target.

The draw means Australia maintain its 1-0 series lead.

The Ashes may hinge on this match which means England will need to level it up if they are to win back the urn. The home side's bowling attack now led by Jofra Archer should produce enough aggression to help produce a win at Headingley.

England Team News

The world only wants to talk about one man - Jofra Archer.

The superstar quick carved out a name for himself in the Big Bash League in Australia but his test debut at Lord's was nothing short of staggering. The 24-year-old tore through the Australian batting line up, claiming five wickets while consistently bowling at the 150km mark.

The big query now is who should England drop if Jimmy Anderson is declared fit.

Archer was the man that replaced England's all-time wicket taker, but after his sparkling debut they would be foolish to drop him.

It's unlikely that Anderson will be fit to play for the third test, but going forward he is a welcome selection headache for an already fearsome fast bowling line up.

Australia Team News

All eyes are on Steve Smith, who suffered a sickening blow to the head from a Jofra Archer bouncer in the first innings at Lord's.

The world's best batsman came out after a break and returned to the field of play but was later ruled out of the side due to concussion protocol.

If Smith is out the series suddenly swings dramatically in England's favour.

While Marnus Labuschagne is a handy replacement Steve Smith is arguably this generation's greatest batting talent. All Australians should be hoping and praying Smith is available ahead of Headingley.

England vs Australia Head To Head

Headingley has been a happy hunting ground for the Australians in recent times.

Australia has won four of the last five test matches played against England at Headingley, although this is the first time the venue has hosted an Ashes test match since 2009.

Interestingly Australia lost its last test match at this venue to Pakistan back in 2010.

England vs Australia Match Up

The battle between David Warner and Jofra Archer holds the key to this test.

Warner has not delivered since returning to the test side, but anyone who's seen the Aussie firebrand before knows he prides himself on scoring runs against the best.

Archer's fearsome display at Lord's was highly impressive, but there could be issues with his ability to produce long spells after such a short turnaround.

This contest is going to be fascinating as the overall test match itself.

England vs Australia Key Statistics

  • Australia has won four of its last five test matches against England at Headingley
  • England firmed from $2.10 into $1.91 at the conclusion of the second test

This is bordering on last chance saloon territory for the English and that's why we think they level the series at Headingley.

The added complexity of the Steve Smith situation is an added headache for the Australians who need all hands on deck to preserve this lead. Unfortunately Smith will either miss or be gun-shy at the crease, which will make it hard for the Australians to win.

We expect the Ashes to be all square heading into the fourth test.
