England vs Australia Second Ashes Test Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips

The Ashes moves to the home of cricket as England looks to bounce back after its first test capitulation against Australia at Edgbaston.

Lord's will hold no fear for the Aussies who defeated the old enemy on their last visit to the ground in 2015 and England's less than stellar form at ground won't inspire a lot of confidence for the home side.

Australia looks the obvious choice in the head-to-head markets, with BetEasy offering $2.75 on the visitors to make it 2-0 in the series.

England Team News

England will rue the opening test as the one that got away.

The home side had Australia on the ropes in the first innings at 8-122 but a brilliant Steve Smith innings and their inability to knock over the tail left them chasing 284.

England surpassed the total by 90 but their second innings bowling was disappointing, allowing Australia to pile on a match-winning 377 run lead.

The biggest mistake for England was selecting Jimmy Anderson.

The home side rolled the dice on Anderson's fitness and paid a heavy price, with their spearhead lasting just four overs on the field. The 37-year-old won't take his place in the England side ahead of Lord's with Jofra Archer the man most likely to replace him.

The home side enters the second test as $2.85 outsiders at Bet365 to square the Ashes Series at 1-1.

Australia Form & Team News

After winning the first test from what looked like a hopeless position Australia will be full of confidence heading into Lord's.

Steve Smith was the catalyst for the win, scoring centuries in both innings for the Australians.

While Smith's contribution was match-defining, a brilliant complementary ton from Matthew Wade as well as a strong six wicket haul on the final day from spinner Nathan Lyon helped seal a remarkable win for the visitors.

Steve Smith is at $3 via BetEasy to score a century in Australia's first innings, which would help Australia establish a strong grip on the Ashes urn.

England vs Australia Head To Head

Australia holds all the cards heading into Lord's.

The Aussies 1-0 lead will boost their confidence of retaining the urn given their last visit to Lord's saw them win by a massive 405 runs on the back of a double century from man of the match Steve Smith.

History suggests if the team who holds possession of the urn takes a 2-0 lead they will go on to retain.

England vs Australia Match Up

Edgbaston showed these teams are evenly matched, with the individual brilliance Steve Smith helping get his side over the line.

For England, Joe Root has to be the man to step up and provide the runs to counteract what Smith will invariably bring to the table.

The English captain got two reasonable starts in the opening test but couldn't clamp down to score a century that his team sorely needed. If England are to win at Lord's Root will need to show leadership and more importantly score some runs.

England vs Australia Key Statistics

  • Joe Root averages 51.08 at Lord’s
  • Australia’s Steven Smith scored 215 & 58 runs the last time he played a test at Lord’s (2015)
  • Australia won at Lord’s on their previous Ashes visit in 2015

Australia look poised to make it 2-0 at the home of cricket.

Not only did the Aussies beat England on their last visit to Lord's, but England's last match at the venue was incredibly shaky, almost going down to the lowly Ireland in remarkable circumstances.

Steve Smith again looks to be the best bet for the visitors and he will once again be in the man of the match considerations.
