Saul Canelo Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders Tips

Boxing’s no.1 superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will take on Britain's Billy Joe Saunders in a super-middleweight unification fight on May 8. Canelo as he is simply known holds the WBA and WBC super-middleweight belts, while Saunders is the reining WBO super-middleweight champion.

30-year-old Canelo (55-1-2, 37 KO’s) has held world titles at light middleweight, middleweight, super-middleweight and light heavyweight. His goal now is to unify all of the belts in the 168 pound division, and should he get past Saunders, he would no doubt target IBF champion Caleb Plant. However, Alvarez is nothing if not the ultimate professional, and he certainly won't be looking past Billy Joe Saunders, nor will he be underestimating him.

For his part, the 31-year-old Saunders (30-0, 14 KO’s) is an undefeated two-weight world champion, having previously held the WBO middleweight title. While he doesn't quite have the resume that Canelo has, Saunders has defeated the likes of Chris Eubank Jr, Andy Lee and David Lemieux. What's more, Saunders is both a southpaw and a “cutie”, which means that he possesses slick defensive skills and is highly adept at making his opponents look bad.

Despite Saunders undoubted talents, and regardless of many so-called experts stating they believe that Saunders has the style to give Canelo a hard fight and even beat him, I am of the opinion that Alvarez dominates this contest, winning a virtual shut out. My reasoning is that Canelo is highly adept at cutting off the ring, possesses extremely fast hands and is a devastating puncher, both to the head and the body.

Head To Head

Saul Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders have never faced each other in the ring as professionals or amateurs, nor is there any record of them sparring together. What's worse, Alvarez and Saunders don't even share any common opponents.

We do know that Canelo has historically had trouble with highly skilled boxers; his only defeat back in 2013 was against the ultimate defensive fighter in Floyd Mayweather, but he also had trouble with Austin Trout, and in particular Erislandy Lara, the slick Cuban stylist whom many still believe defeated Canelo.

Saunders has thus far proven to be adept at handling aggressive punchers; Spike O'Sullivan, John Ryder, Chris Eubank Jr and Andy Lee were all come-forward, big punching types, and none of them could figure out Saunders’ style, nor catch him with a KO punch. In 2017 Saunders pulled off his best victory when he defeated the dangerous Canadian David Lemieux, famously slipping one of Lemieux’s vicious left hooks and then making a point of watching it sail off into the crowd.

While the Mexican's record already read like a Who’s-Who of boxing greats, featuring names like Mosley, Mayweather, Cotto and Khan, it was Canelo’s back to back fights with then-WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin that proved to be the making of him.

Alvarez took on the most feared fighter in the world and trade bombs with him for 24 rounds, drawing the first fight and winning the second on a split decision. After those two wars, everybody knew that Canelo was both a legit tough guy with a granite chine and also a great boxer.

Since then Canelo has been on a tear, winning world titles in two more weight classes and fighting with a regularity rarely seen in modern boxing. In 2019, Alvarez jumped all the way up to light heavyweight and knocked out the WBO title holder Russia’s Sergey Kovalev, a fearsome puncher enjoying his third reign as champion.

Last December, Canelo dropped back down to 168 lbs and pulled off possibly the best win of his career, comprehensively outpointing Britain's previously undefeated 6’3” Callum Smith to claim both the WBA and WBC super-middleweight titles. In his most recent outing in late February, Alvarez blew away his over-matched mandatory challenger Avni Yildirim in three rounds.

Billy Joe Saunders Form

While Billy Joe Saunders had already established himself as one of British boxing's brightest young talents, it was his split decision victory over Chris Eubank Jr in 2014 that brought him to the attention of the general sporting public. The build up had featured a bitter war of words between the two, and the fight itself was brutal, with Saunders winning the first six rounds and Eubank staging an incredible comeback throughout the second half of the fight.

The following year, Saunders outpointed Andy Lee to win the WBO middleweight title, making three defences before stepping up to super middleweight. In 2019, Saunders won his second world championship when he outpointed Shefat Isufi to claim the vacant WBO super-middleweight title.

In his most recent bout last December, Saunders outpointed British veteran Martin Murray over 12 rounds. While Murray wasn't quite the fighter who a decade earlier had been robbed in world title fights against Felix Sturm and Sergio Martinez, he was still a good technician and gave Saunders the 12 round workout he so desperately needed.

Most fans and experts rate Julio Cesar Chavez as the greatest Mexican fighter of all time, and in 1992, Chavez fought Hector Camacho, a Puerto Rican with a similar set of skills to Billy Joe Saunders. On paper, it was anybody's fight, and many believed that Camacho – also a great fighter – would be too slick for the somewhat one-dimensional Chavez.

However, on the night Chavez dominated the bout, winning a one-sided decision. Camacho had ran all night, but Chavez was a master at cutting off the ring and trapping the Puerto Rican on the ropes, scoring heavily to both head and body.

I see the fight between Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders panning out very similarly to the fight between Chavez and Camacho. Saunders will run and try and use his slick skills to keep Canelo at bay, but the Mexican’s ability to cut the ring and then use his incredible speed and accuracy to land his vicious hooks to the head and body will be too much for Saunders. Canelo wins a one-sided decision.
