Saul Canelo Alvarez vs Avni Yildrim Tips

The biggest star in boxing today, Mexico’s Saul “Canelo” Alvarez defends his WBA and WBC super middleweight titles against mandatory challenger Avni Yildrim on Sunday, February 28.

Canelo is rated as the best fighter in the world pound for pound by most experts, and is also the highest paid; prior to the global pandemic, Canelo signed an 11 fight deal with sports streaming site DAZN worth a minimum of $365 million.

Turkey’s Avni Yildrim is the luckiest boxer alive; while there are a host of more deserving fighters queuing up for the chance to take on Canelo and earn the life-changing money such a fight brings, Yildrim has earned this fight by virtue of being the WBC mandatory challenger, even though he lost his previous fight more than two years ago.

I’m picking Canelo to make light work of Yildrim, who is a decent fighter and a good puncher but hardly world-class. The Mexican has become the perfect fighting machine, and he will simply have too much for Yildrim in every department. Canelo’s heavy shots to the head and body will start to take effect early, and it could be over by the third. However I’m picking the fifth-round, and Canelo to win via a KO or TKO.

  • Canelo is a 4-weight world champion
  • Canelo is 54-1-2 as a pro
  • Yildrim is ranked no.2 by WBC
  • Yildrim is 21-2-0 as a pro

Head to Head

Alvarez and Yildrim have never faced each other as amateurs or professionals, nor do they share any common opponents.

Saul Canelo Alvarez Form & Stats

30-year old Saul Alvarez (54-1-2, 36 KOs) turned professional as a 15-year-old light welterweight in 2005. Because of his red hair he was nicknamed Canelo (from the spice canella) and with his aggressive style and KO punch, soon gained a following in his native Guadalajara.

By the time he was 19, Canelo was a TV star in Mexico, and Oscar De La Hoya signed him to his Golden Boy promotional company. In 2011, Canelo defeated Ricky Hatton’s brother Matthew for the vacant WBC super welterweight title. Wins over Shane Mosley and Austin Trout followed, and in 2013 Canelo boxed pound for pound no.1 Floyd Mayweather in a huge pay-per-view fight.

Alvarez lost by a majority decision, although he would later claim that he learned more from that one fight than from his previous 43 combined. Since losing to Mayweather, every bout that Canelo has taken part in has been a huge event. In 2015, he defeated Miguel Cotto for the WBC middleweight title, and two years later had epic back-to-back unification fights with the fearsome WBA and IBF middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, drawing the first and winning the second on points.

In 2019, Canelo jumped to light heavyweight and knocked out Sergey Kovalev for the WBO title. In his only fight of 2020, Alvarez dropped back down to super middleweight and captured the WBA and WBC titles from Britain’s previously unbeaten Callum Smith, a result that made Canelo a four-weight world champion.

Avni Yildrim Form & Stats

Why the 29-year old Avni Yildrim (21-2-0, 12 KOs) is the WBC’s mandatory 168 lb title challenger remains a mystery. Ranked no.2 by the WBC, he lost his last fight in February 2019 on a technical decision to Anthony Dirrell. That was for the vacant WBC 168 lb title. Dirrell subsequently lost his title to David Benavides, who was stripped of the belt after failing a drug test.

When Canelo fought WBA super middleweight champ Callum Smith in December 2020, the WBC decided to add their vacant title to the fight. Could this have been on the understanding that if Canelo won, he would give Yildrim first shot? That explanation would make sense.

Yildrim is probably best known to Aussie and UK boxing fans for his fight with Chris Eubank Jr. in the World Boxing Super Series back in 2017. Yildrim had been much-hyped within the boxing industry, reputedly knocking James De Gale’s front teeth out in a sparring session in New York. Eubank Jr. took on Yildrim in Turkey in front of his own fanatical fans, and in the best performance of his career to date, knocked Yildrim out in three rounds.

Canelo Alvarez vs Avni Yildrim FAQ

When is the Canelo Alvarez vs Avni Yildrim fight taking place?

Canelo Alvarez vs Avni Yildrim takes place at 2:00PM (AEDT) on Sunday, February 28

Where can I watch a Canelo Alvarez vs Avni Yildrim live stream?

Our live streaming calendar shows you where you can watch a Canelo Alvarez vs Avni Yildrim live stream.

The only advantage Avni Yildrim will have over Canelo Alvarez on fight night is his height - the Turk is three inches taller at 5’11” - although they share the same 70” reach. At 5’8” Canelo is a genuine tank at 168 lbs, with superb defensive skills that match his withering punching power.
Canelo rarely gets tagged flush, and when he does, has displayed a granite chin. In his last fight, Alvarez stood in front of 6’3” power puncher Callum Smith, slipping his shots with ease while repeatedly landing his devastating left hook.
Canelo won every round against Smith, and it was his most impressive performance yet. Yildrim isn’t a Callum Smith, he’s not even a Rocky Fielding, and Canelo blew him away in three rounds. While this fight could also be over that quickly, I’m picking Canelo to KO or TKO Yildrim in the fifth.
