Paul Gallen vs Lucas Browne Tips

After Jake Paul’s latest headline grabbing ring adventure at the weekend, another Paul is keeping boxing at the forefront this week – Aussie rugby legend turned boxer Paul Gallenfaces his biggest challenge yet when he takes on the fearsome Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne at the WIN Entertainment Center at Wollongong on Wednesday (April 21).

Both men carry controversy into the ring with them; because of Paul Gallen’s fame as one of Australia’s most famous rugby players, his bouts attarct large viewing figures which generate substantial revenue. As a result he is paid far more than many elite level Australian fighters, even though Gallen has only fought in six round bouts, largely against non-boxers.

Lucas Browne won a version of the WBA heavyweight title in 2016, but the first of two failed drug tests saw him lose his belt outside of the ring. At 6’5”, with his heavily muscled and tattooed physique and shaved head, Browne is an intimidating figure, and yet he is a highly articulate, intelligent and amiable character outside of the ring.

I’m backing Paul Gallen to outpoint Lucas Browne in a six round slugfest that will see both men rocked, possibly even floored. The decision will be close, maybe even split, no doubt leading to a rematch later in the year.

Paul Gallen Form

The 39-year-old Paul Gallen (10-0-1, 5 KOs) is one of Australia’s most prominent sporting figures.  Any Aussie sports fan is well aware of Paul Gallen’s exceptional record as a rugby player; between 2001-19 he played 349 games – many as captain – for the Cronulla Sharks in Australia’s NRL (National Rugby League). Gallen also played 32 times for the Australian national team.

A long time boxing fan, Gallen began his boxing career when he took part in a charity event in New Zealand in 2012. After two amateur bouts, he had his first professional fight in 2014, and from then on he would box intermittently, respecting his day job as a professional rugby player. However, when Gallen retired from rugby in 2019, he was able to step up the level and regularity of his boxing bouts.

Up until now, Gallen has fought mainly against other non-boxers, many whom were making their professional debut. For example, in his most recent fight, he won a decision over 47-year-old Mark Hunt, whose background is MMA and who was taking part in only his third bout after losing and drawing the first two. Prior to that, Gallen was held to a draw by 44-year-old Aussie-rules legend Barry Hall, who was making his debut as a boxer.

Lucas Browne Form

The 41-year-old Lucas Browne (29-2, 25 KOs) remains Australia’s most successful heavyweight boxer. At 6’5” and weighing around 260 pounds in his prime, Browne was never the most skillful of fighters but possessed good mobility and stamina, especially for a man his size. What’s more, Browne carries world-class punching power, and can hurt anybody he catches clean.

In 2013, taking part in his 16th professional fight, Browne won a decision over US boxing great James Toney, himself a four-weight world champion. Although Toney was way past his prime, he was still a cagey veteran looking to win, and Browne displayed great tenacity in outpointing such a legend over twelve rounds.

Browne’s biggest win came in 2016, when he traveled to Grozny in Chechnya to take on former WBA heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev of Uzbekistan. In front of a fiercely partisan crowd, Browne climbed off the canvas to knock out Chagaev in the 10th round and win the vacant WBA heavyweight title, becoming Australia’s first (and as yet only) winner of a version of the heavyweight title. Two weeks later, Browne would be stripped of that title after testing positive for the banned asthma drug clenbuterol.

In 2018, Browne lost his undefeated record when he was knocked out in six rounds by Britain’s world-class contender Dillian Whyte. In 2019, Browne looked a shadow of himself when he was flattened in three rounds by British journeyman David Allen. He returned to the ring later that year and knocked out John Hopoate in two rounds. Hopoate is another former rugby player turned boxer, and the only common opponent Browne shares with Gallen.

Verdict

If this fight were taking place five years ago, I would back Lucas Browne to knock Paul Gallen out within a couple of rounds. However, Browne is now 41, he hasn’t beaten a worthwhile opponent since 2016, and he was knocked out by a journeyman two years ago.

At 39 Paul Gallen is no spring chicken himself, however he loves to fight, he has a great engine over six rounds and throws punches relentlessly. The 5’11” Gallen reminds me a little of Rocky Marciano in the way he barges forward, taking a few shots to land his own, and pounding his opponent relentlessly, although he clearly lacks the Rock’s one-punch KO power.

I’m backing the 2021 version of Paul Gallen to be too much for the 2021 version of Lucas Browne, especially over six rounds. Gallen will win a thrilling fight on points in a contest that will see both men hurt and possibly floored. A longshot wager would be a fiver on Gallen to stop Browne in the sixth round.
