Joseph Parker vs Dereck Chisora Tips

Heavyweight contenders Joseph Parker of New Zealand and Dereck Chisora of the UK square off at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England tonight (Saturday, May 1.) The fight is for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental Heavyweight Title, and is an eliminator for a crack at the WBO world heavyweight title, currently held by Anthony Joshua.

Should Joshua choose to vacate the WBO belt to facilitate his proposed fight with Tyson Fury, the upcoming bout between the WBO’s no.1 contender Oleksandr Usyk and no.2  ranked  Joe Joyce will be elevated to a world title fight, with the winner of Chisora vs Parker lined up for first crack at the new champion.

Both Chisora and Parker are seasoned veterans who have had their fair share of success – and failure in the ring. Chisora gave Vitali Klitschko all he could handle in his only crack at the world title almost a decade ago. Parker held the WBO belt for two years, wining it in 2016 and losing it on a points decision to Anthony Joshua in 2018.

Chisora gave former undisputed cruiserweight champion and one of the pound-for-pound best fighters in the world Oleksandr Usyk his toughest ever test last October, losing on points. In Parker’s most recent bout he looked less than impressive outpointing fellow New Zealander Junior Fa in February.

I’m backing Joseph Parker to come from behind and climb off the canvas to score a dramatic late KO of Dereck Chisora in a thrilling fight on Saturday.

  • Parker ranked 3rd by WBO
  • Parker is 28-2-0, 21 KO’s
  • Chisora ranked 10th by BoxRec
  • Chisora is 32-10-0, 23 KO’s

Joseph Parker Form

29-year-old Joseph Parker stands 6’4” and weighed in for tonight’s fight at 241lbs, which is pretty much his ideal fighting weight. The fight with Chisora will be Parker’s first under the tutelage of his new trainer, former WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee. Lee only retired in 2017 and is just 36 years old, but proved his worth as a coach as part of the team who helped Tyson Fury prepare for his  rematch with – and subsequent destruction of – Deontay Wilder last year. Crucially Lee himself was trained by the late Emmanuel Steward, one of the greatest trainers ever.

Parker is a very talented boxer-puncher, although he has become more a boxer and less a puncher in recent years. It was that lack of world-class power that cost him his WBO heavyweight title in his fight with Anthony Joshua, and the main reason he had trouble keeping Dillian Whyte away from him in their 2018 fight, which Parker lost on points despite flooring and almost stopping Whyte in the final round.

Parker has undergone several operations to his elbows to remove calluses and scar tissue in a bid to free up movement in his arms and increases punching power. However, judging by his lackluster display in his recent points-victory over fellow New Zealander Junior Fa in February, either the operation wasn’t successful or the results need time to manifest.

Derek Chisora Form

37-year-old Derek “Dell-Boy” Chisora stands 6’1” and scaled 250 lbs at yesterday’s weigh-in. Chisora remains one of the most exciting heavyweights in boxing today, and with his crouching, aggressive Joe Frazier-esque all-action style and fearsome hooks to both head and body, he is still a threat to anybody in the division.

Back in 2017 when Chisora lost a lackluster decision to Germany’s Agit Kabayel for the European heavyweight title, it looked like the end of the road for one of the most popular – and controversial - heavyweights to ever grace a UK boxing ring. However the following year an unlikely pairing occurred when the recently retired David Haye - one of only three men to KO Chisora - approached Del-Boy with a view to managing his career.

Haye brought on board a new coaching team, changed Chisora’s nutrition,  his training and mental approach to his boxing, and “War Chisora!” was born. The result has been one of the truly great “Indian Summers” of any UK fighter’s career. Since teaming up with Haye, Chisora is 5-2 with four KOs, including big wins over Carlos Takam (TKO8), Arthur Szpilka (KO2) and David Price (TKO4).

Arguably Chisora’s most recent outing, his points defeat to Oleksandr Usyk was one of his best ever displays. Usyk is lauded by many as the future of the heavyweight division after dominating at cruiserweight. However, Chisora bullied Usyk for much of the bout, took the Ukrainians best shots and came roaring back with bombs of his own. Many experts believe that Chisora should have been given the decision.

A fight between Dereck Chisora and Joseph Parker was first mooted several years ago, but was turned down by the New Zealander who at the time said he had “bigger fish to fry.” However right now it’s a fight that makes enormous sense for both participants.

I’m backing Parker to score a career-resurrecting knockout of Chisora in the ninth round of a thrilling encounter. I’m predicting that Parker will have to climb off the canvas and will be behind on points when he finally shows his true mettle as a warrior and lands the booming shots that finally bring an end Dereck Chisora’s amazing career.
