Jake Paul vs Ben Askren Tips

YouTube sensation Jake Paul has his third professional boxing match this weekend when he takes on fellow American Ben Askren in a eight-rounder at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday, April 18.  Because of Paul’s huge YouTube following plus a large number of people who just want to see him lose, this bout could generate huge money via PPV (Pay Per View) sales.

While this will be Paul’s third fight in a boxing ring, it will be Askren’s first. But before you cry “gross mismatch”, Askren is very experienced in various fields of unarmed combat. A US representative at the 2008 Olympics in freestyle wrestling, he then switched to MMA , eventually competing in the UFC.

While Paul has displayed some raw boxing ability, is heavy handed and can clearly punch, there is a feeling that compared to his first two opponents (a fellow YouTuber and an ex-basketball player) this time Paul is in with a real fighter, and will be exposed as a novice and even a fake.

I’m backing Jake Paul to win this fight, but on points in an ugly mauling contest, full of clinching and grappling.

  • Paul is 2-0 as a pro boxer
  • Paul has KO’d both opponents early
  • Askren is 153-8 as a collegiate wrestler
  • Askren is 19-2 in MMA

Jake Paul Form

24-year old Jake Paul (2-0, 2 KO’s) is a former Disney Channel actor turned YouTuber and social media phenomenon, with more than 20 million subscribers to his YouTube channel. Along with his elder brother Logan, Jake Paul has always been a huge boxing fan, and while he has claimed to have taken part in some amateur bouts, there is no actually evidence of any such fights.

In 2018, Logan Paul’s long running feud with fellow YouTuber, Brit KSI led to them settling their beef in the ring, resulting in a huge event that was staged at the Manchester Arena. Jake saw an opportunity to get in on the action himself, and he faced KSI’s younger brother Deji in the chief support bout, winning by a fifth round TKO.

Paul was so smitten with every aspect of boxing, from the training and preparation to theactual fighting, and he decided to compete as a professional. Paul obtained a boxing license, and in 2019 had his first pro bout, KO’ing another YouTuber turned boxer AnEsonGib in the first round. In November 2020 on the undercard of the Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr exhibition match, Paul had his second pro fight, knocking out 5’9” former NBA basketball player Nate Robinson in two rounds.

Ben Askren Form

36-year old Ben Askren (MMA record 19-3, 6 KO’s) is a retired former freestyle wrestler and mixed martial artist. Askren started out as a collegiate wrestler, eventually becoming a two-time national champion and representing the USA at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, reaching the quarterfinals.  Askren’s freestyle wrestling record was 153-8, with 91 wins by way of submission.

After the Olympics, Askren announced his intention of competing professionally in mixed martial arts (MMA).  He signed a contract with the Bellator organization in 2010 and began competing as a welterweight . In boxing the welterweight limit is 147 lbs, but in MMA it is 170 lbs.

Askren had a very successful MMA career, winning all but 2 of his 21 fights. The problem is, none of his wins were down to his striking ability – because he never displayed any. His intention was always to take the action to the ground and use his wrestling skills to invariably win his fights. So while Jake Paul is stepping up in class and fighting a genuine former professional fighter, in terms of boxing skills (and this bout will be solely a boxing contest) Askren might be even greener than Paul.

Where can I watch a Jake Paul vs Ben Askren live stream?

Our live streaming calendar shows you where you can watch a Jake Paul vs Ben Askren live stream

At 6’1”, Jake Paul will be three inches taller than Ben Askren, and while both men must weigh in inside the 191 lbs limit the fight is set at, Paul will likely be the heavier man when they get in the ring.
I’m backing Jake Paul to win an eight-round decision over Ben Askren in an ugly, clinch-filled snooze fest that could spell the end of Paul’s career. Askren might not have the tools to win this fight with strikes, but he does have the skills to survive via grappling, which is what he’ll resort to doing.
