Carl Frampton vs Jamel Herring Tips

Belfast’s former two-weight world champion Carl Frampton takes on WBO super featherweight champion Jamel Herring of the United States in Dubai on Saturday, April 3. For Frampton, who has held world titles at super bantamweight and featherweight, it is the chance to make history as the only boxer from the “island of Ireland” to become a three-weight world champion.

Jamel Herring is a former US Marine sergeant who boxed for his country at the 2012 Olympics. Herring overcame a couple of career setbacks to claim his world title in 2019. This will be his second title defense. Herring will have significant advantages in height and reach over Frampton. The American is a clever boxer and highly adept at tying up aggressive opponents and neutralizing their attacks.

Because of his physical advantages and skills I’m picking Herring to defeat Frampton via a unanimous decision on April 3. Frampton’s only hope of victory would be by a KO or stoppage, but the Ulsterman has only stopped two opponents in his past 10 fights dating back to 2015.

  • Frampton is 28-2
  • Frampton 2 X World Champ
  • Herring is 22-2
  • Herring’s 2nd title defense

Head to Head

Carl Frampton and Jamel Herring haven’t faced each other in the ring either as professionals, amateurs, or as sparring partners. Frampton and Herring don’t share any common opponents.

Carl Frampton Form & Stats

34-year old Carl Frampton (28-2, 16 KO’s) turned pro back in 2009 after an extensive amateur career. In his early years as a super bantamweight, Frampton was a concussive puncher who knocked out the majority of his opponents.

In 2014, after winning 18 consecutive fights (13 KO’s), Frampton challenged Spain’s Kiko Martinez for his IBF super bantamweight title. Frampton had stopped Martinez in nine rounds the previous year, but this time the tough Spaniard took him the full 12 rounds, with Frampton winning the decision.

In 2016, Frampton added the WBA super bantamweight title when he defeated Manchester’s unbeaten Scott Quigg in a huge event. Later that year, Frampton moved up to featherweight and produced his career-best performance, winning a close decision over the previously undefeated Leo Santa Cruz, who would go on to become a three-weight world champion.

The following year, Santa Cruz handed Frampton his first loss via a points decision. In 2018, Frampton attempted to win the IBF featherweight title, but found the sheer pace, punch-output and pressure fighting of defending champion Josh Warrington overwhelming and lost for only the second time on points.

Jamel Herring Form & Stats

35-year old Jamel Herring (22-2, 10 KO’s) turned pro in 2012 after failing to win a medal at the London Olympics. In 2016 after 15 consecutive wins, Herring suffered his first setback when he was TKO’d in the 10th round by the tough Russian Denis Shafikov. It was a devastating setback for Herring, and two fights later he tasted defeat for a second time, losing a decision to Ladarius Miller.

Since then, Herring has been undefeated in six consecutive fights, capturing the WBO junior lightweight title in 2019 with a decision over Japan’s Masayuki Ito, and retaining it the following year with an eighth round disqualification win over Jonathan Oquendo.

At 5’10”, Herring is extremely tall for a super featherweight, and will have 5” in height and 8” inches in reach over Frampton. While Herring is a slick boxer, he has no problem with smothering an aggressive opponent’s attack. His title defense against Oquendo was an ugly spectacle as Herring clinched continuously every time Oquendo launched an attack.

Our live streaming calendar shows you where you can watch a Carl Frampton vs Jamel Herring live stream

With his exciting, all-action style and amiable personality, Carl Frampton has been an extremely popular fighter, with large numbers of fans in Ireland (North and South), the UK, the US and Australia. In his long career, Frampton has scored big wins over great fighters like Kiko Martinez, Leo Santa Cruz and Nonito Donaire.
However, Jamel Herring is all wrong for Frampton. The American is a huge super featherweight, and while not a big puncher, Herring is a very good boxer, physically strong and highly adept at holding and clinching. This looks like a long, hard night for Frampton, and I’m backing Herring to win comfortably on points over 12 rounds.
