Alexander Povetkin vs Dillian Whyte Tips

Heavyweight contenders Dillian Whyte and Alexander Povetkin face each other in a world title eliminator on Sunday, March 28 (AEDT). The bout is a rematch; Povetkin pulled off a major upset last year when he twice climbed off the canvas to KO Whyte with a tremendous left hook in the fifth round.

Both men are seasoned campaigners who have mixed in excellent company. Whyte was the WBC’s no.1 contender prior to his loss to Povetkin. The Russian once held the WBA regular heavyweight title and has subsequently defeated a string of top heavyweights.

I’m backing Povetkin to do the double over Whyte, who is bound to be cautious after suffering such a devastating defeat, and will lose some of the cultured aggression that makes him so effective.

Povetkin will have more opportunities to take control, be the aggressor, and let fly with his dangerous shots. The Russian is one of the hardest hitting heavyweights ever, and displays pinpoint accuracy with his punching. I’m picking Povetkin to KO Whyte earlier this time, and I’m going for round three.

  • Whyte is a former WBC no.1 contender
  • Whyte is 27-2-0 as a pro
  • Povetkin is a former WBA champion
  • Povetkin is 36-2-1 as a pro

Head to Head

The first fight between Dillian Whyte and Alexander Povetkin took place in May 2020 during the UK’s first pandemic lockdown. A clear bookies favourite, Whyte was the younger, taller and heavier fighter with a far superior reach.

He might not have been as technically astute as former Olympic gold medalist Povetkin, but he was a solid boxer with an excellent jab, a withering body attack and  a KO punch in either hand.

Povetkin was 40-years old going into the fight and although he’d only lost to the very best, he was seen as past his prime and ready to be taken.

That certainly seemed to be the case for the first four rounds as Whyte dominated the bout, flooring his opponent twice late in the fourth and seemingly on the verge of a knockout. However, seconds into the fifth round, as Whyte moved in for the kill he was felled by a tremendous left hook, and was out before he hit the canvas.

Alexander Povetkin Form & Stats

It’s fitting that Alexander Povetkin (36-2-1, 25 KOs) was born in Kursk, site of the largest battle of World War II. The 2004 Olympic super heavyweight champion, Povetkin turned professional the following year and in 2011, with a record of 21-0, defeated former champion Ruslan Chagaev for the vacant WBA heavyweight title.

Ironically, similarly to the career of Dillian Whyte, Povetkin would score his best victories after suffering his first defeat. Povetkin lost his WBA heavyweight title in a unification fight with Wladimir Klitchko in 2013, and soon after began KO-ing heavyweight contenders like Manuel Charr (KO 7), Carlos Takam (KO 10) Mike Perez (KO 1) Mariusz Wach (KO 12) and Johann Duhaupas (KO 6).

In 2018, Povetkin challenged Anthony Joshua for his world heavyweight title belts, and although he had his moments, Povetkin suffered only his second defeat when he was stopped in seven rounds. In 2019 Povetkin outpointed Tyson Fury’s cousin Hughie and drew with the highly rated American contender Michael Hunter. Then in 2020 came his KO win over Dillian Whyte.

Dillian Whyte Form & Stats

Jamaican born Whyte (27-2-0, 18 KOs) moved to the UK with his family when he was 12 years old. Whyte’s initial combat choice was kickboxing, and it was a sport he excelled at, becoming British and European heavyweight kickboxing champion.

Whyte began his amateur boxing career at the age of 20, and incredibly fought Anthony Joshua in his debut, winning a three round decision. After six wins, a dispute with the ABA led Whyte to turn professional.

In 2015, Whyte – by then 16-0 – fought Anthony Joshua for the British heavyweight title, and despite rocking AJ in the second and putting up a tremendous fight, was knocked out by Joshua in seven rounds. Whyte was suddenly a big name, and set about establishing his credentials by subsequently defeating a string of contenders including Derek Chisora, Robert Helenius, Lucas Brown, Joseph Parker and Oscar Rivas.

Still only 32 years old, the 6’4”, 250 lb Whyte is just coming into his peak years as a heavyweight, but another defeat by Povetkin might be one setback too many.

If it were a lesser caliber of fighter, I may have considered giving Dillian Whyte a shot at turning things around in this rematch. However, we aren’t talking about a lesser caliber fighter, we are talking about a highly accomplished boxer puncher, a man who is extremely good at figuring out how to defeat the opposition.
Povetkin and his team will have been analyzing and dissecting the first fight as only Russians can and they will have come up with perfect game plan for the rematch. Once again Whyte will have all of the physical advantages, but this time he will be cautious in his approach to the fight.

Povetkin is going to be looking for that hesitation in Whyte, and he will pounce on it when he sees it. I’m looking for Povetkin to make a statement early, hurting Whyte in the first round. He will stun him and stop him in his tracks in the third, and a barrage of shots from Povetkin finishes Whyte in that round.
