Phoenix Suns @ Los Angeles Lakers Live Stream & Tips

On Friday, June 4 the Phoenix Suns will travel to the Staples Center for the last time this year to take on the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 6 of their Western Conference Playoffs First Round series. On Wednesday, Phoenix stunned the Lakers with a 115-85 thrashing, winning by a 30-point margin, with the Suns’ Devin Booker outscoring LeBron James by 30 points to 25.

The win took Phoenix to 3-2 in the series, and just one victory away from the Conference Semifinals, where they would potentially play the winner of the series between the Denver Nuggets and the Portland Trail Blazers (Denver currently lead 3-2.)

The only question worth asking is can the Lakers possibly win game six, and drag the series into a seventh and deciding game? Historically the answer is a resounding “Yes” as the Lakers have come back from losing positions in playoff series’ on many occasions. But can this weakened Lakers team do it against a very good Phoenix Suns outfit?

Anthony Davis was instrumental in both of the Lakers’ wins last week, and since he was forced out of the series injured, the Lakers haven’t won a game. Where earlier this season a fit LeBron James would have powered his team over the line, James hasn’t been the force he was since returning from an ankle injury.

On Friday the LA Lakers - driven on by sheer pride - will make this a far more competeive game than Wednesday's thrashing, but I'm backing the Phoenix Suns to narrowly defeat the Lakers and clinch the series 4-2.

  • Phoenix finished 2nd in Western Conference
  • Phoenix were 48-19 this season
  • Lakers finished 7th in Western Conference
  • Lakers were 37-30 this season

Head to Head

The LA Lakers and the Phoenix Suns have played each other 255 times in regular-season NBA games. The Lakers currently lead that head-to-head by 146 wins to 109. In their ten most recent matches over the past three seasons, the Lakers lead 7-3.

However, in 2021 the score is 2-1 to the Phoenix Suns. Phoenix defeated LA at the start of March by 114-104, and again later that month by 111-94, while the Lakers won their most recent match, defeating Phoenix 123-110 in May. So far in their 2021 NBA Playoffs First Round series the score is 3-2 in the Phoenix Suns favour.

Phoenix Suns Form

Last Friday when the Los Angeles Lakers took a 2-1 series lead after defeating the Phoenix Suns 109-95, the writing was on the wall – or so it seemed. Anthony Davis had just scored 34 points for the Lakers for the second straight game – and second straight win – and suddenly Phoenix, despite their higher seeding and superior regular season record, looked the lesser team.

Then two things happened; first, Davis withdrew from the series injured, and second, Phoenix fought like lions in game 4, matching the Lakers strong start, edging the second and third periods and then hanging on to their lead despite a storming finish by the Lakers. The Suns won 100-92 to level the series, and then on Wednesday they played like potential NBA 2021 Champions with a masterful 115-85 30-point domination of the defending champions.

Los Angeles Lakers Form

Have the Los Angeles Lakers shot their bolt in this playoff series? Sure, they took a 2-1 series lead last Friday, but were those back-to-back match-winning displays by the Lakers’ Anthony Davis the final brave efforts by a great player who it turns out was still injured?

We will find out on Friday, because the Lakers will be without Davis, and will instead be relying on the inspiration of another legend in LeBron James, albeit a James that is 30% of the player he was earlier this season. In Wednesday’s game, the damage was done in the first half of the match, and the Lakers went into the third quarter trailing by 36-64. Worse still, when the Lakers attempted their trademark strong finish, Phoenix stayed with them and even edged the fourth quarter for a 115-85 win, a 30-point margin of victory, the Lakers worst defeat of the season.

Verdict

With Anthony Davis now out injured, the LA Lakers have gone from leading their playoff series against the Phoenix Suns 2-1, to trailing 3-2, and on the precipice of defeat. What’s more, judging by the Suns crushing 115-85 victory over LA on Wednesday (the Lakers heaviest loss of 2021), Phoenix are finally playing like the Western Conference no.2 seeds.

The Lakers are 17-time NBA champions and the reigning title holders, and they won’t go down without a fight. However, based off Wednesday's performance I’m backing the Phoenix Suns to end the LA Lakers reign as champions and edge this game by ten points or less, in a matchup that will feature around 220 points.
