Tasmania JackJumpers vs Illawarra Hawks Tips

The Tasmania JackJumpers will host the Illawarra Hawks kicking of the NBL 2024 postseason it was is expected to be a real defensive tussle.

The JackJumpers and Hawks played on January 12, with Tasmania coming from behind to force the match into overtime, only to be heartbroken in a 107-108 loss in front of their home fans. Revenge will be sweet for the Ants though as they are predicted to flip the result in another tight contest at MyState Bank Arena.

There is a lot of hype around Justin Tatum and the resurgence of the Hawk’s, however, I have faith in the defensive systems of Scott Roth and the Jackjumpers will execute, progressing straight to the playoffs against the Perth Wildcats.

This game is going to be a real defensive contest and I don’t see either team scoring over 90 points if these two don’t end up going to overtime again. The game total is inflated because of their previous results against one another, however, the finals will call for a much more defensive gameplan and the total will not go over 176.5 points.

  • Tasmania won 2 of 3 games against Illawarra with their only loss coming in overtime.
  • Tasmania come into the finals in the best form of any team winning their final 4 matches of the season.
  • Tasmania allow their opposition to score the least amount of points of any team with a points against average of 84.9.
  • Tasmania conceded just 67 points (South-East Melbourne) and 72 points (Perth) in their final two games of the season.

Tasmania JackJumpers Form & Team News

Tasmania finished the season strong, winning their final four games to peak at the right time of the year, carrying the longest winning streak of any team in the NBL 24 playoffs.

The JackJumpers are a real threat in these playoffs with their extremely disciplined defensive system that has been tough for their opposition to break down. Tasmania’s defence has allowed their opposition to score the least amount of points per game with a points against per game average of just 84.9, just under 3 points less than Melbourne United in second.

A lot has been expected of Milton Doyle and Jordan Crawford and they have delivered for the JackJumpers, however it has been Jack McVeigh who has impressed, having his best season of his career, averaging 16.4 points per game, 5.3 rebounds per game and is shooting at 52 percent from the field, which are all career-highs.

Illawarra Hawks Form & Team News

Illawarra’s season can be broken up into two categories BT & AT, before Tatum and after Tatum. Justin Tatum, father of Boston Celtic Jayson Tatum, took over the Hawks when they had a record of 2-7 after their first 9 games of the season. Since then, they finished the season with a 0.500 percent record with Tatum leading the Hawks to 12 wins from 19 games.

The improvement of Gary Clark and Tyler Harvey has been the key that unlocked the success for the Hawks since Tatum’s arrival. With Harvey directing traffic Clark has been a formidable force down low, needing to be double teamed to contain him which has also seen Sam Froling get heavily involved in large patches of their matches.
