Sydney Kings vs Melbourne United Tips

Melbourne United will attempt to hang onto top spot in the NBL Season Ladder when they take on the Sydney Kings on Friday March 19. Melbourne are chasing their second NBL Championship in three seasons, but they are taking on the team that were runners-up to the Perth Wildcats last season. Also, whilst United have lost their last three games, the Kings were victorious last time out against the Brisbane Bullets.

I’m backing the Sydney Kings  to pull off an upset and defeat Melbourne United on Friday. My theory is that Sydney are a much better team than their current position would suggest. Also despite February’s loss to Melbourne, Sydney dominated them last season 5-2.

The Sydney Kings will win this game by 10 points or less, in a match that will feature a combined total of less than 180 points.

  • United 1st in NBL Season Ladder
  • United 10-4 this season
  • Kings 6th in NBL Season Ladder
  • Kings 7-8 this season

Head to Head

Melbourne United and the Sydney Kings have played each other a total of 33 times in NBL regular-season and playoff games dating back to 2010. Currently Melbourne lead their head-to-head by 22-12. However in their last eight games over the past two seasons, Sydney lead by 5-3. In their most recent meeting in February of this year, Melbourne were victorious by 83-80.

Sydney Kings Form

The Sydney Kings are themselves three time-NBL champions, in 2003, 2004 and 2005, and last season were runners-up to the Perth Wildcats, so their pedigree is undeniable. That said, it is also undeniable that this season the Sydney Kings have been underperforming, with a record of seven wins and eight defeats. Sydney are currently sixth in the NBL league, and need to be at least fourth to make the playoffs.

Despite the success of last season, Sydney got off to a dreadful start this time around, losing three of their first four games. Although they steadied the ship somewhat by winning three of their next five matches, since losing to Melbourne United in late February, they have struggled to find consistency, but go into Friday’s game having won two of their last three matches. Last time out they managed to win 119-108 against the Brisbane Bullets.

Melbourne United Form

Melbourne United currently top of the NBL Season Ladder (league), with 10 wins and four defeats. Hot on their tails are the Perth Wildcats, the reigning NBL champions who are just one win away from overtaking Melbourne. As the Wildcats and United (formally known as the Melbourne Tigers) are the two most successful teams competing in the NBL, their rivalry is intense.

The problem for Melbourne is they drastically need to improve on their recent form or they will surely surrender top spot to the Wildcats. Melbourne are on a three-game losing streak, having suffered successive defeats to the Brisbane Bullets by 96-88, city rivals the South East Melbourne Phoenix by 97-92, and most recently on Sunday they went down to the third ranked team, the Illawarra Hawks 77-69.

Our live streaming calendar shows you where you can watch a Melbourne United vs Sydney Kings live stream

Despite the fact that there is substantial gap between sixth-placed Sydney and league-leaders Melbourne, plus the fact that last time they met in February, Melbourne defeated Sydney 83-80, the Kings have a real shot of pulling off an upset in this game. United are completely out of sorts having lost their last three games, while Sydney go into this match off the back of two wins in their last three matches.

Based off recent results plus their record against Melbourne last season, I’m backing the Sydney Kings to win Friday’s game against Melbourne United by 10 points or less in a match that will feature 180 points or less.
