Sydney Kings vs Melbourne United Live Stream & Tips

The Sydney Kings take on NBL Season Ladder winners Melbourne United in a regular-season game on Saturday, May 29. Melbourne have topped the NBL Season Ladder for most of the season, while Sydney are fifth. This will be the fourth time these two teams have faced each other this season, with Melbourne 2-1 up. It will also be Sydney’s final game of the season.

Sydney went into their previous game against the Perth Wildcats with an outside chance of finishing in the top four and earning themselves a playoff spot. It was always going to be a tough ask as Sydney’s final two games were against the two best teams in the NBL. In the end, Perth hammered Sydney 81-67. However, if Sydney can defeat Melbourne, and the fourth placed Illawarra Hawks lose both of their remaining games, the Kings still have a slim chance of finishing in the top four.

Perth’s win over Sydney was also their final match of the season, therefore Melbourne United have won the NBL Season Ladder for 2021 with two games to spare. After the match against Sydney, they will begin preparation for the playoffs and their chance to win a second NBL Championship in three seasons.

Because Melbourne United have won the Season Ladder and will likely be looking ahead to the playoffs, I believe that the Sydney Kings will be more focused on this game than their rivals. I’m therefore backing Sydney to finish their season with a victory over the best team in the league, and keeping alive their slim chance of a playoff spot.

  • Melbourne top of NBL Season Ladder
  • Melbourne 25-7 this season
  • Sydney 5th in NBL Season Ladder
  • Sydney 16-17 this season

Head to Head

The Sydney Kings and Melbourne United have played each other 36 times in NBL games dating back to 2010. Overall, United lead this head-to-head 23-13. In their last ten games over the past two seasons, Sydney lead 6-4. This season Melbourne United have won two of the three matches they have played against the Sydney Kings, most recently in early May when Melbourne were clear winners by 103-78.

Sydney Kings Form

The Sydney Kings are currently fifth in the NBL Season Ladder, with one less win than the fourth placed Illawarra Hawks. With just one game left of their NBL regular season to play, Sydney need to defeat Melbourne United for any chance of a playoff place. United are the best team in the NBL this season by some distance, and have finished top of the Season Ladder.

Sydney trail United 1-2 in 2021, and in their most recent game earlier this month, Melbourne were clear winners 103-78. Sydney’s only win against Melbourne came in March when they won 103-75. Going into this matchup, Sydney have won just two of their last seven games, and last time out were beaten by the Perth Wildcats 81-67

Melbourne United Form

Despite pressure from the reigning NBL champions the Perth Wildcats, Melbourne United have guaranteed themselves the honor of finishing top of the NBL Season Ladder in 2021. Perth – the most successful team in Australian pro-basketball history with 10 NBL championships to their name finished second, and could face Melbourne in the playoff finals.

Melbourne United won their only NBL championship in 2019, and are slight favorites to win their second this season. Melbourne are 15-2 in their last 17 matches, and their final two games of the regular-season are against Sydney on Saturday and the Cairns Taipans the following Monday. Last time out, Melbourne comfortably defeated the Brisbane Bullets 99-88.

Verdict

The Sydney Kings must defeat NBL Season Ladder winners Melbourne United on Saturday to have any chance of finishing in the top four and progressing to the playoffs. Even if they were to beat Melbourne, they still need the Illawarra Hawks to lose their last two games of the season badly for their scheme to work.

Sydney have beaten Melbourne once earlier this season, and as United have already won the Season Ladder and will surely have one eye on the playoffs, there probably isn’t a better time for Sydney to play them than right now.

Because of these factors, I’m backing the Sydney Kings to pull off a victory over Melbourne United on Saturday, winning by a margin of less than 10 points in a matchup that will feature around 175 points.
