SE Melbourne Phoenix vs Adelaide 36ers Tips

The South East Melbourne Phoenix will take on the Adelaide 36ers for the fifth and final time when they meet in an NBL regular season match on Saturday, April 17.  SE Melbourne are third in the NBL Season Ladder - their highest ranking in their brief history - while the 36ers are seventh.

In a season that has largely been a success, the 36ers have been a bit of a bogey team for the Phoenix. While SE Melbourne will finish 2021 with winning records over most teams, a side that will likely finish in the bottom three have beaten them twice this season. SE Melbourne need to finish their series 3-2 up, because the nightmare scenario is they lose to the 36ers a third time, and that defeat costs them a playoff place.

Because of how much they stand to lose, SE Melbourne will dig deep in this match, and I’m backing them to go all out and secure victory over Adelaide in an epic encounter which they will win by ten points or less.

  • Phoenix 3rd in NBL Season Ladder
  • Phoenix 12-8 this season
  • 36ers 6th in NBL Season Ladder
  • 36ers 10-11 this season

Head to Head

The SE Melbourne Phoenix and the Adelaide 36ers have played each other eight times in NBL regular season games, with Adelaide leading this head-to-head 5-3. They have played each other four times this season, with the score tied at two wins each. In their most recent match in March of this year, SE Melbourne won 96-89.

SE Melbourne Form

After finishing second from bottom last year in their first ever NBL season, the SE Melbourne Phoenix have been a revelation in 2021. Had the Phoenix started this season a little stronger, they would most likely have topped the Season Ladder at some point, and maybe would be top right now. However they are currently third, and must stay focused because they are in danger of blowing their hard work.

Only a lack of concentration could account for SE Melbourne’s recent narrow loss to the Illawarra Hawks, a team they’d thrashed by more than 30 points a week earlier. Exactly the same thing happened last week; the Phoenix defeated the Sydney Kings convincingly by 98-84, but four days later lost to the same team 97-90.

Now SE Melbourne take on a team with nothing to lose who have beaten them twice already. Should they lose again to Adelaide and results go against them, SE Melbourne will slip out of the playoff places and their season could be over.

Adelaide 36ers Form

The Adelaide 36ers began 2021 with four wins in the opening six games, a sequence that briefly saw them in the top-four of the NBL Season Ladder. The 4-time NBL champions finished seventh last season, and the early signs were good for a higher finish this year. However despite some impressive wins including two over SE Melbourne, defeats began to pile up, and Adelaide began to slide down the table.

They are currently seventh, the same place they finished last season, and the irony is because they have a far better record than the two teams below them – New Zealand Breakers and the Cairns Taipans – they likely won’t slip any further. However, they are unlikely to catch any of the teams above them, so it looks like the 36ers will likely finish seventh – again.

Verdict

Last season was SE Melbourne’s first in the NBL, and they finished 8th in the table. The Adelaide 36ers finished 2020 with a 3-1 record over them. This year has seen a dramatic improvement in SE Melbourne, and yet Adelaide have remained a thorn in their side, defeating them twice.

This could be one of the best matches of the season, with both teams going all out. I’m backing the Phoenix to dig deep and defeat the 36ers by ten points or less in a match that will feature less than 175 points.
