Perth Wildcats vs South East Melbourne Phoenix NBL25 Tips

Perth hosts the Round 1 Hoops Fest with all teams coming together to play the first round in one city. The Wildcats will celebrate with a win first up against the Phoenix who took the season series just a year ago.

The Wildcats needed to add some shooting around their multiple MVP star Bryce Cotton. Not only have we seen the progression in local talent Ben Henshall, but the additions of Elijah Pepper and Dylan Windler will greatly help this team create more scoring options, alleviating the strain on Cotton. Perth already had a great perimeter defence and now have added to their ability to get more rebounds, something they lacked last season.

South East Melbourne have a better roster this year, there is no doubt. The question is just how quick can this group gel and will they be able to play defence? My prediction is that they will not have come together enough at this point and the defensive deficiencies against one of the league’s best scoring teams will be too much to handle.

Wildcats win with a high Game Total.

  • Perth were 2nd in Scoring in NBL24 with the least amount of Turnovers per game of any team in the league.
  • South East Melbourne allowed the most points per game last season aswell as two games of 100+ points in the Blitz.
  • The Wildcats had the 3rd best opposition 3P% last season allowing only 32.3% from deep.
  • The Phoenix ranked 7th in 3P% in NBL24.

Perth Wildcats Form & Team News

The Perth Wildcats come into the season opener going 3-0 in the preseason Blitz tournament. Picking up wins against the New Zealand Breakers, Illawarra Hawks and Cairns Taipans will put the team in good stead heading into round 1 Hoops Fest where every game will be played in the West Australian capital.

Bryce Cotton is once again tipped by many to be top of the MVP voting come the end of the season but was a little rusty in the two pre-season games he played in with inconsistent performances across the two matchups.

The Wildcats dropped some talent in the off-season in Alex Sarr and Jordan Usher but were able to pick up some pieces which potentially fit the team dynamics better and deliver on the goal of surrounding Bryce Cotton with more scoring power. Dylan Windler comes in as the third import with Elijah Pepper and Next Star Izan Almansa expected to contribute off the bench in scoring.

South East Melbourne Phoenix Form & Team News

South East Melbourne went 2-1 in their NBL Blitz campaign. A big loss to the Hawks in the first matchup of the tournament immediately posed questions about the Phoenix ability to defend with 6 opposition players scoring in double digits and the Hawks posting a hefty 112 point total.

Game 2 saw them come up against the Kings who shared the minutes amongst their players and we saw visions of what to expect from the Phoenix in terms of shooting this season as they went 54% from the floor including 26-39 from 2pt range. Game 3 against the 36ers was a whitewash with the opposition basically throwing out the people sitting in the front row with so many injuries to their lineup.

The Phoenix had a major roster overhaul with the biggest loss being Mitch Creek. They have replaced his talent and scoring with Derrick Walton Jr and Nathan Sobey with Jordan Hunter as the new Centre. It may take a few weeks for the glue to start sticking with this team but the talent is there.
