Perth Wildcats vs New Zealand Breakers Tips

The Perth Wildcats take on the New Zealand Breakers in an NBL regular-season game on Saturday, May 1. Perth are currently second in the NBL Season Ladder, while New Zealand are eighth. The Wildcats are the reigning NBL champions, and chasing a record 11th title this year.

This will be the fourth match between Perth and New Zealand’s this season. The Wildcats won their first two meetings, but the Breakers defeated Perth 83-78 in April. After Saturday’s game, these teams will play each other once more, on May 9.

By their lofty standards, this season has been extremely disappointing for fans of New Zealand. That said, they have actually performed better in their last five matches, winning three of them, their best run of 2021. In their most recent match, New Zealand were beaten by current MBL Season Ladder leaders Melbourne United 90-76.

Melbourne eclipsed Perth at the top of the table last month when after winning nine consecutive matches they were beaten by the Adelaide 36ers in a major upset. United have proven to be particularly tough to catch ever since for the Wildcats, and are currently enjoying a 10 match winning streak.

I’m backing Perth to maintain the pressure on Melbourne at the top of the table with a win over New Zealand on Saturday. The Wildcats will defeat the Breakers by a margin of at least ten points in a matchup featuring around 175 points in total.

  • Perth 18-6 this season
  • New Zealand 8th in NBL Season Ladder
  • New Zealand 8-16 this season

Head to Head

The Perth Wildcats and the New Zealand Breakers have played each other 33 times in NBL games dating back to 2013. Overall, the Wildcats lead this head-to-head by 19 wins to 14. In the ten matches they have played during the last three seasons, Perth lead 8-2. When they last met in April of this year, New Zealand won 83-78.

Perth Wildcats Form

As all fans of Australia’s National Basketball League know, the Perth Wildcats are the most successful team in the history of the championships, with ten titles, including 2020. This season Perth have enjoyed a running battle for league leadership with the 2019 NBL champions Melbourne United.

While both teams look certs to make the end-of-season NBL playoffs, the pride of finishing top of the Season Ladder is currently resting in United’s hands. Melbourne are on a ten-match winning streak, so Perth can only keep winning themselves and wait for Melbourne to slip up. Last time out, the Wildcats scored a convincing 92-74 win over the Brisbane Bullets.

New Zealand Breakers Form

The New Zealand Breakers are one of the National Basketball League’s great teams and are four-time NBL champions. Between 2011 and 2015, New Zealand reigned supreme. However, the Breakers have struggled to find their form of late. They finished bottom of the NBL Season Ladder last year, and in 2021 have jostled with the Cairns Taipans at the wrong end of the table.

The Breakers are currently 8th, with a record of 8-16. New Zealand have actually won three of their last five matches, their best sequence of the season. Last time out, the Breakers were beaten by league leaders Melbourne United 90-76. Previously they had defeated the Adelaide 36ers 93-77.
