Perth Wildcats vs Illawarra Hawks Tips

Second placed Perth Wildcats take on the 4th ranked Illawarra Hawks in an NBL regular-season game on Friday, April 16. This will be the third time these two teams have played each other in 2021, with Perth 2-0 up. Both of these teams are looking to extend their seasons by reaching the playoffs, which only the top-four teams contest.

Perth are the defending NBL Champions, and were top of the NBL Season Ladder until suffering a shock defeat to the Adelaide 36ers earlier at the weekend. That loss ended the Wildcat’s nine-match winning streak, and allowed then second-placed Melbourne United to regain top-spot.

The Illawarra Hawks had been in the top-four all season. However, three consecutive defeats saw them slip to 6th in the league, but Illawarra returned to the playoff positions with two hard-fought victories over the third-ranked SE Melbourne Phoenix and the Cairns Taipans. Meanwhile, Perth also won, albeit unconvincingly against New Zealand.

I’m backing a resurgent Illawarra Hawks to take full advantage of a Perth Wildcats team that suddenly looks as if they have lost their way. The Hawks will defeat the Wildcats by a margin of ten points or less.

Head to Head

The Perth Wildcats and the Illawarra Hawks have played each other 33 times in NBL games dating back to 2010. Overall, the Wildcats lead this head-to-head by 26 wins to 7. In the eight matches they have played during last season and this one, Perth lead 8-1. When they last met on March 26 of this year, Perth won 81-70.

Perth Wildcats Form

The Perth Wildcats are the current NBL Champions, and are the most successful team in the history of the championships, with ten titles. This season Perth have had a duel at the top of the table with the 2019 NBL champions Melbourne United. When United lost four straight games last month, Perth were primed to take advantage and take over at the top.

To Melbourne’s credit, they kept the pressure on Perth, even when the Wildcats went on a nine-match winning streak, and when Perth slipped up against Adelaide last weekend, United regained top-spot with their seventh straight victory. The Wildcats rebounded in a less than convincing fashion on Tuesday with an overtime win over 2nd-from-bottom New Zealand Breakers 85-79.

Illawarra Hawks Form

The Illawarra Hawks are currently fourth in the NBL Season Ladder, with a record of 12 wins and 11 defeats. Illawarra had recently slipped out of the top-four for the first time this season, and three-straight defeats saw them drop to sixth in the NBL Season Ladder. Worse still, the Hawks were set to face all of the top four teams in their next six games.

However, Illawarra’s legendary “never say die” attitude saw them pull off their best win of the season, defeating third ranked SE Melbourne Phoenix 82-80, and they then squeaked past ninth-placed Cairns Taipans by the same ultra-close scoreline. Two very close victories over two very different teams, and the Hawks are once again in the playoff positions.

In terms of success and standing in Australian basketball, the Perth Wildcats are the LA Lakers of the NBL with a record 10 titles. By comparison, the Illawarra Hawks have been part of the NBL since its formation in 1979, and yet have only won only one championship, in 2001. Could this be why the Hawks are so beloved by most NBL fans?
From a neutral, clinical perspective, Illawarra have an excellent opportunity to take advantage of a displaced Perth Wildcats, still annoyed at themselves for blowing their winning streak against lowly Adelaide, and subsequently looked extremely vulnerable against New Zealand.
I’m backing the Hawks to pull off their biggest win of the season and defeat the Wildcats by ten points or less in a match that will feature more than 175 points.
