Perth Wildcats vs Adelaide 36ers Tips

League leaders the Perth Wildcats take on the Adelaide 36ers in an NBL regular-season game on Saturday, April 10. This will be the third time these two teams have met this season: Last year, Perth and Adelaide played each other four times, with honors even at two wins each. So far this season Perth are 2-0 up with two games left to play.

The Wildcats and the 36ers met for the first time this year on March 14, with Perth winning 97-88. They faced each other again a week later, and this time Perth triumphed 92-82. Considering some of the drubbings the Wildcats have been handing out lately, losing by margins of nine and ten points respectively is pretty good going.

The Wildcats go into this game riding a nine-match winning streak, while the 36ers have one just twice in their last 10 matches. However, because Adelaide won their last match, I’m expecting Saturday’s contest to be competitive, with Perth winning by 10 points or less.

Head to Head

The Perth Wildcats and the Adelaide 36ers have played each other 51 times in NBL regular-season games, with the Wildcats leading this head-to-head by 28 wins to 23. In the nine matches they’ve played since the start of 2019, Perth lead 6-3. Their most recent matchup came in March of this year, and the Wildcats won by 92 to 82.

Perth Wildcats Form

Fans of the NBL are only too aware that the Perth Wildcats are the most successful team in the league’s history. In total Perth have won 10 NBL championships, and are the reigning National Basketball League champions. Their early form in 2021 - in which they lost four of their opening six games - suggested that a successful title defense was unlikely.

However, the Wildcats would turn things around to the extent that they are currently enjoying one of the best runs of any team in Australian sports right now, with just one defeat in their last 12 matches. This run has taken Perth from the bottom of the NBL Season Ladder to top-spot, a position they have held now for three weeks. Perth have just finished a three-game series against the Sydney Kings which they won 3-0.

Adelaide 36ers Form

The Adelaide 36ers are seventh in the MBL Season Ladder, with eight wins and 13 defeats. Ironically, they are currently in the exact place they finished in last season, seventh in the table. After the strong start the 36ers made to the 2021 season, both the team and their fans were likely expecting an improvement on that position.

By the end of January, Adelaide had a 4-2 record, and were in the top-four of the MBL Season Ladder. While there form slipped a little during the first few weeks of February, by March they were free-falling down the table. Since February 25 the 36ers have gone 2-8 in their last 10 games, although they did win their most recent match, on April 3 against the Illawarra Hawks 84-72.

Verdict

The Perth Wildcats are on a nine-match winning streak right now, and have just won three consecutive games against the Sydney Kings, results that pushed Sydney out of the playoff positions.

It’s going to be one helluva team that snaps Perth’s winning streak, and much as I’d love to see them do it, I don’t think Adelaide are that team. Therefore I’m backing the Wildcats to defeat the 36ers by 10 points or less in a competitive matchup that will feature around 175 points.
