New Zealand Breakers vs Melbourne United Tips

Melbourne United take on the New Zealand Breakers in an Australian NBL regular season game on Sunday March 21. Melbourne are attempting to win their second NBL Championship in three seasons, and only recently surrendered top-spot in the Season Ladder to the Perth Wildcats.

The New Zealand Breakers enjoyed five years of NBL domination from 2011-2015, but are currently 8th in the nine-team league table. These two sides played each other in March, with Melbourne winning a close game 87-84. I’m backing United to repeat that result, this time by a wider margin of at least six points.

Head to Head

Melbourne United and the New Zealand Breakers have played each other a total of 32 times in NBL regular-season and playoff games dating back to 2010. Currently New Zealand leads their head-to-head by 18-12.

The Breakers dominated the matches between these two teams from 2010-17, but in recent years the pendulum has swung in Melbourne’s favor. In the last eight games they have played over the past two seasons, Melbourne lead 6-2. In their most recent encounter in March this year, United won 87-84.

New Zealand Breakers Form

The New Zealand Breakers are themselves four-time NBL champions, winning in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015. This season however has been a struggle, and New Zealand are currently second from bottom in the NBL Season Ladder, with four wins and ten defeats.

The Breakers had a dreadful start to the 2020-21 season, winning just one of their first seven games. Since then New Zealand have gone 3-4, but they have lost their last three games, most recently going down 88-67 to the Brisbane Bullets.

Melbourne United Form

Melbourne United are currently second in the NBL Season Ladder (league), with 11 wins and five defeats. United surrendered top-spot to the Perth Wildcats last week after losing four-straight games. Perth are the reigning NBL champions and also the most successful team in the league with no less than ten championships to their credit. Melbourne are attempting to win their second title in three seasons.

United finally halted their losing streak with a much-needed win over the NBL’s fourth-ranked team, the Illawarra Hawks 77-69 on March 14. In that game Jock Landale was United’s top points scorer with 18, Melbourne’s Mitch McCarron led for high rebounds with 11, while United’s Chris Goulding led for high assists with five.

Verdict

Just a few years ago the New Zealand Breakers were the more successful team in the NBL, but right now they are struggling near the bottom of the table, while Melbourne United chase their second NBL championship in three years.

In March, United beat the Breakers 87-84, but following that game Melbourne have been on a slump, winning just one of their last five games. New Zealand haven’t fared much better, winning one of their last four matches. However, in their most recent games, United won vs the Illawarra Hawks, while the Breakers were massacred 88-67 by the Brisbane Bullets.

I’m backing Melbourne to defeat New Zealand on Thursday by a margin of six points or more, in a match that will feature more than xxx.
