The Breakers most recent outing was a 102-89 loss to the South East Melbourne Phoenix. The Phoenix got out the gates early taking a 30-17 first quarter lead that the Breakers failed to recover from for the rest of the game.
It leaves New Zealand in second last spot in the standings with a 9-16 record (4-9 on the road) heading into the last 3 rounds of the regular season. This year will be one to study for the Breakers who started 7-3 even with a trip to the US thrown in the mix. But some dour scoring performances coupled with a 5 game suspension to Parker Jackson-Cartwright derailed their season.
The loss to the Phoenix came down to discipline with SEM only hitting 2 more buckets than NZ but getting to the line at a much higher rate and taking advantage of the free points on offer. The Breakers also allowed 21 points from their 13 turnovers in a poor show of defensive energy.
NZ have not been able to reach 90+ points in 17 of their 25 games this season which has meant that the 4th ranked defence has not been enough to take victories against opponents that can lift the scoring rate of the game.

The most recent matchup was a 121-87 loss to the league leading Illawarra Hawks where they allowed their opponent to score 80 points in the paint, the most of any team this season. The Bullets have been understrength for a number of games, missing their big man as a deterrent under the rim.
With Casey Prather also missing the matchup the scoring duties were left to Josh Bannan and Keandre Cook with new recruit Josh Adams adding 12 off the bench. As has been the story of the season though for the Bullets, it just wasn’t enough.
There is still no word on whether Prather, Tyrell Harrison or Deng Adel will be available for this matchup.
