Melbourne United vs Tasmania JackJumpers NBL24Championship Series Game 1 Tips

What a Championship Series this is going to be and there is a monster chance that this will be a five-gamer.

Before we head into the breakdown of game one, the series tip is Tasmania 3-1. In short Melbourne will get up in the first and Tasmania will win three straight with Melbourne unable to settle after dropping 2 games over next weekend. There is your BOLD prediction.

Melbourne at John Cain Arena is a whole other beast and they will now have three whole days to settle without any travel after their game 3 win over the Hawks. Tasmania are the underdog and will start the series a little nervous as they did in game 1 of their semifinal against the Wildcats in Perth.

I expect Matt Delladova to have a big game 1, but Scott Roth and his coaching staff will learn a hard lesson and be better off for it during the rest of the NBL24 Championship Series. Jack McVeigh and Will Magnay are going to be important for the Ants in this series and will be unlocked more and more the deeper we get in the final, but game one will be lost by Tasmania by failing to find their range early.

Both Melbourne and Tasmania are top 3 defensive teams so I expect that this game will be a slow and cautious battle to start off the series and the Under 177.5 game total will hit.

Melbourne United Form & Team News

United survived a scare in their semifinal series getting up in the end with a 2-1 victory. Besides putting in their best performance in game 3 to beat the Hawks 100-94 and controlling the game from the get go, the first two games of the series were definitely in Illawarra’s favour and the series could’ve been a whole other story if the Hawks didn’t let a 4th quarter 16-point lead disappear in game 1.

Defensively, Melbourne had real trouble containing the combination of Gary Clark and Sam Froling down low and they will be put under fire by Tasmania’s bigs in the same way in the NBL24 Championship Series.

Offensively, United used their depth all over the court to get the points they needed, getting contributions from all angles and working over the Hawks inside and out. Matt Dellevadova went to another level in the playoffs, leading Melbourne with 61 points, 24 rebounds and 15 assists in the series.

Tasmania JackJumpers Form & Team News

Tasmania’s game 2 and 3 performances against Perth were their best of the season and gives them huge momentum coming into the NBL24 Championship series. The JackJumpers shocked the Wildcats in the last two games of the series with a faster pace and beat them at their own game, putting up 102 points in game 2 and 100 in game 3 with 80+ possessions and relying on their defence to get stops.

Tasmania fell in game 1 of the series by an unfamiliar performance by Keanu Pinder who beat them down low early, freeing himself up from the 3-point line. Scott Roth and the Ants then found a way to take Pinder out games 3 and 4 and were able to contain the rest of the Wildcats offence, including NBL MVP Bryce Cotton.

Jack McVeigh continued to have his career-best season dropping 49 points (22+27) in games 2 and 3 of the series, while Milton Doyle overcome an inaccurate performance in game 1 to sink 24 points in both game 2 and game 3. Will Magnay was octopus like in the series leading the JackJumpers in all three matches totalling 24 boards in the semifinal series.
