Melbourne United vs South East Melbourne Phoenix Tips

NBL Season Ladder winners Melbourne United take on their city rivals SE Melbourne Phoenix in game 1 of their best-of-three playoff series on Friday, June 11. The winner of this series will face the winners of the matchup between the Perth Wildcats and the Illawarra Hawks. United are chasing their second NBL championship in three seasons, while SE Melbourne are attempting to win the title in only their second season of existence.

Melbourne United and SE Melbourne played each other five times during the regular season, with United finishing 3-2 up. SE Melbourne have shown they have the players to hurt United, none more so than their controversial star Mitch Creek. That said, Melbourne have been rock-solid all season, and Phoenix will no doubt be hoping that their rivals have one eye on the final and are not 100% focused on this series.

I’m backing Melbourne United to win the opening game in their playoff series against SE Melbourne on Friday, defeating their rivals in a tight, edgy encounter by 10 points or less.

  • United top of NBL Season Ladder
  • United 28-8 this season
  • Phoenix 4th in NBL Season Ladder
  • Phoenix 19-17 this season

Head to Head

Melbourne United and the SE Melbourne Phoenix have played each other just eight times, as SE Melbourne are a new team that only joined the NBL in time for the 2019-20 season. United lead their head-to-head 6-2. In their most recent fixture in May 2021, SE Melbourne were winners by 94-83.

Melbourne United Form

Aside from a couple of weeks one United bizarrely lost four games in a row, Melbourne were relentlessly consistent all season. Apart from those two weeks when Perth replaced the top, United were top of the Season Ladder throughout the season, finishing the regular season with a record of 28 wins against eight defeats, three wins more and three losses less than their closest rivals the Perth Wildcats.

However, in a stat more pertinent to the playoffs, Melbourne also finished the season in the best form of the top four teams, winning four of their last five games, including their final three. Unlike Perth, Illawarra and SE Melbourne who are lost their final games, United will go into their opening playoff match with a winning mentality.

SE Melbourne Form

Regardless of what happens during these playoffs, the SE Melbourne Phoenix have had a sensational 2021. In only their second season in the NBL they finished fourth in the table, and with a little more consistency and focus on defense they would surely have finished higher. Nevertheless, considering they were second from bottom last season, their trajectory is certainly going in the right direction.

Overall, SE Melbourne finished with a record of 19 wins against 17 defeats, although unfortunately they lost three of their last five games, not ideal form to take into a playoff series. However, they have no injuries to their team and go into this series knowing that they have beaten their rivals twice this season, including their most recent meeting in May.

Verdict

The game between Melbourne United and SE Melbourne Phoenix is not only the opening game of their NBL playoff series, it is also a Melbourne derby game, so literally anything can happen.

However, I’m basing my prediction off the recent form both teams bring into this series, and because of that I’m backing Melbourne United to defeat their city rivals by 10 points or less in a hard-fought encounter to take a 1-0 series lead.
