Melbourne United vs South East Melbourne Phoenix Tips

It’s going to be an all-Melbourne Derby when NBL leaders Melbourne United take on seventh placed South East Melbourne Phoenix on Wednesday, March 10. United have made an exceptional start to the season with 10 wins from their first 12 games and right now they are comfortably in front of pre-season favorites the Perth Wildcats in second place and the Illawarra Hawks in third.

By comparison, South East Melbourne have won six and lost seven of their first 13 games of the season. However, both sides go into this game off the back of defeats; the Brisbane bullets thumped United 96-88 on Sunday (March 7), while Sidney edged out Phoenix 91-85 on Saturday.

Head to Head

Melbourne United lead their head-to-head with South East Melbourne Phoenix by 4 wins to 1. Melbourne Phoenix won their first meeting with United back in March 2019, but since then, Melbourne United have won all four of their matches, most recently at the end of January this year. On that occasion, United won by a scoreline of 96-90.

Melbourne United Form

Melbourne United were formerly Melbourne Tigers, the second most successful team in NBL history with 5 championships, the last in 2018-19.  United began this season with six straight wins before losing to the Perth Wildcats in February by 89-85.

United then won another 4 straight matches before losing on Sunday to the Brisbane Bullets 96-88. United’s win percentage of 0.833 is far superior to that of second-placed Perth Wildcats with a win percentage of 0.636.

However there are still plenty of games left of the regular-season and United should have no room for complacency. Right now, the most important thing for United is to get back in the win column at the expense of city rivals Melbourne Phoenix.

South East Melbourne Phoenix Form

The South East Melbourne Phoenix came into being in 2018 as a brand new NBL franchise, and played in their first NBL season in 2019-20, finishing 8th out of nine teams. Currently seventh in the Season Ladder, Phoenix are much improved this season, and have already claimed some major scalps.

The main problem for Melbourne Phoenix this season has been a lack of consistency. While Phoenix have been able to beat most of the teams in the NBL, they have literally alternated a win with a defeat for most of the season. Melbourne Phoenix began their season in January with a loss to the Adelaide 36ers, but three days later they defeated Adelaide in a rematch. Next up were two games against Perth Wildcats, and once again Phoenix lost the first and won the second.

In late January, Melbourne Phoenix played city rivals Melbourne United for the first time this season, losing 96-90, but they bounced straight back in their next game defeating the Illawarra Hawks 98-82. The rest of the season so far has been more of the same, and the frustrating thing for Phoenix fans is that they have beaten all of the top teams – barring Melbourne United – but including the Perth Wildcats and the Illawarra Hawks.

Where can I watch a Melbourne United vs South East Melbourne Phoenix live stream?

Our live streaming calendar shows you where you can watch a Melbourne United vs South East Melbourne Phoenix live stream

South East Melbourne Phoenix have beaten most of the teams above them in the NBL, and their loss to Melbourne United was close, so there’s no real reason why the Phoenix can’t “rise” to the occasion vs United.
However, the hard facts are that Melbourne United have won their last four against Phoenix, they are the league leaders and this is a derby game, so they will be both confident and fully focused. I’m picking Melbourne United to defeat Melbourne Phoenix by ten points or less, in a close match that will have a points total of 200 or less.
