Melbourne United vs New Zealand Breakers Tips

Second-placed Melbourne United will play the 8th ranked New Zealand Breakers on Saturday, April 10 in an NBL regular season game. This will be the third meeting between these two teams this season, with Melbourne leading 2-0. United are attempting to win their second NBL Championship in three seasons.

The New Zealand Breakers’ current lowly ranking is a far cry from the team that enjoyed five years of NBL domination from 2011-2015. Their current reality is the Breakers are 1-4 in their last five matches, although they do have games in hand over every other team in the league.

The last time these two teams met was in late March, and that match finished a hard-fought 82-79 in Melbourne’s favor. I’m backing United to win by a wider margin this time of around 10 points.

  • United 2nd in NBL Season Ladder
  • United 15-5 this season
  • Breakers 8th in NBL Season Ladder
  • Breakers 5-12 this season

Head to Head

Melbourne United and the New Zealand Breakers have played each other a total of 33 times in NBL regular-season and playoff games dating back to 2010. Currently New Zealand leads their head-to-head by 18-13. In the nine games these teams have played over the past two seasons, Melbourne lead 7-2. In their most recent game in March this year, United won 82-79.

Melbourne United Form

Melbourne United are currently second in the NBL Season Ladder with a record of 15 wins and five defeats. A run of four straight losses in March cost Melbourne top spot in the NBL Season Ladder, but they have rebounded well and are currently riding a five-game winning streak.

United go into this game off the back of two straight victories over the Cairns Taipans. On April 2, Melbourne defeated Cairns 95-85, with Jock Landale scoring 20 points for them. Two days later, United defeated the Taipans once again by a 10 point margin, this time 83-73, with Chris Goulding their top points’ scorer with 15.

New Zealand Breakers Form

Anyone new to the NBL should not form an opinion on the New Zealand Breakers based off their current league position. The truth is the Breakers are one of the league’s great teams and are four-time NBL champions. New Zealand have failed to get going in 2021 and are currently second from bottom in the NBL Season Ladder, with five wins and 12 defeats.

They have however played just 17 games, four less than the three teams directly above them, Adelaide, Illawarra and Sydney. If the Breakers could convert those games in hand to victories, and results were to go their way, they could soon be in the top half of the table. Last time out, New Zealand were beaten by SE Melbourne Phoenix 81-76.

Verdict

The New Zealand Breakers proved in their recent close defeat by the league’s third ranked team SE Melbourne Phoenix that despite their current low league ranking, they are decent side. Indeed, the last time the Breakers played Melbourne United, they only lost by three points, 82-79.

Despite that, I can’t see New Zealand springing an upset on Saturday, and I have to back Melbourne to win this match by 10 points or less, in a game that will total around 175 points.
