Melbourne United vs Adelaide 36ers Tips

Current league leaders Melbourne United take on the Adelaide 36ers in an NBL regular season game on Saturday, April 24. Adelaide are currently seventh in the NBL Season Ladder. This will be the third time these two teams have faced each other this season, with the score at 2-0 to Melbourne. In their last meeting back in February, United won 82-73.

Melbourne United were the NBL Champions in 2019, and they are favorites to win their second title in three seasons. Aside from a few weeks when they were displaced by the Perth Wildcats, United have been top of the Season Ladder throughout this season, and their rock-solid record of 18 wins and just 5 defeats speaks for itself.

The Adelaide 36ers finished seventh in last year’s Season Ladder, and right now are on course to replicate that feat. Despite their poor form for most of the season, right now Adelaide seem to have hit their stride, and have won three of their last four matches, scoring big victories over the Illawarra, Perth, and most recently SE Melbourne.

Because of this impressive run, I’m going out on a limb and backing Adelaide to upset Melbourne United with a hard-fought victory on Saturday, bringing an end to Melbourne’s eight-match winning streak.

Head to Head

Melbourne United and the Adelaide 36ers have played each other 5 times over the past two seasons including the current one. Melbourne lead that head-to-head 4-1, and have won both matches they have played in 2021. In their most recent meeting in February, United won 82-73.

Melbourne United Form

Melbourne United are top of the NBL Season Ladder, with 18 wins and five defeats. Their nearest rivals, the Perth Wildcats have one less win and one more defeat, so United are far from guaranteed finishing the regular season in pole position. However, Melbourne are very much the form team in the NBL right now, and are riding an eight-match winning streak.

Melbourne’s largest player, the hulking 6’11” 255 lb Jock Landale has invariably been United’s no.1 points scorer this season, averaging around 20 points per game. However, in their most recent win which saw Melbourne defeat the Illawarra Hawks 87-76, it was their 7’ 225 lb Sudanese forward Jo Lual-Acuil who was United’s chief points scorer with 15. Jock Landale consoled himself with 13 points, plus 11 high rebounds and five assists.

Adelaide 36ers Form

Last season the Adelaide 36ers finished seventh in the NBL Season Ladder and right now are bang on course to equal that (under)achievement. The irony is that the 36ers are 4-time NBL champions, winning their last title in 2002. In fact, between 1998 and 2002, Adelaide were the best team in the league, winning three championships.

These days the objective of Adelaide would seemingly be to finish above the bottom-two in the table. And yet they are clearly a decent team, and their recent record of three wins in their last four games is testament to that. During that run, Adelaide have defeated three top teams in Illawarra, Perth and SE Melbourne (their latest game).

Oddly the only team to beat them during this sequence were the league’s worst team, the Cairns Taipans, possibly because of complacency on Adelaide’s behalf. That certainly will be the case when they take on Melbourne United on Saturday.

Most sane people wouldn’t think twice about backing Melbourne United to defeat the Adelaide 36ers. It’s certainly the logical pick, and one I would certainly go for, had not Adelaide displayed a surprising run of good form lately.

In their last four games, the 36ers have beaten playoff contenders the Illawarra Hawks, second placed defending NBA L champions the Perth Wildcats, and SE Melbourne Phoenix, currently third in the Season Ladder.
Based off those results, my gut instinct is telling me that Adelaide are about to end Melbourne’s eight-match winning streak. Therefore, I’m backing the Adelaide 36ers to defeat Melbourne United on Saturday by 10 points or less in a match that will feature around 170 points.
