Illawarra Hawks vs Sydney Kings Tips

The Illawarra Hawks will take on the Sydney Kings in an NBL regular season game on Thursday,   March 11. The Hawks are currently third in the NBL Season Ladder, behind table-toppers Melbourne United and the defending NBL champions the Perth Wildcats.

The Kings are currently sixth in the league, and will need to step on the gas if they are to crack the top four and qualify for the playoffs.

The Illawarra Hawks defeated the Sydney Kings in their first meeting of the season back in February, 85-82. I’m backing the Hawks to beat the Kings again in another close encounter, by ten points or less.

  • Hawks are 3rd in NBL Season Ladder
  • Hawks are 7-6 this season
  • Kings are 6th in NBL Season Ladder
  • Kings are 6-7 this season

Head to Head

The Illawarra Hawks and the Sydney Kings have played each other a total of 29 times, with Sydney leading their head-to-head 15-14. In the seven matches these two teams have played since the start of 2019, the Hawks have a slight edge over the Kings with 4 wins to 3. In their most recent meeting in February 2021, the Hawks just squeaked by 85-82.

Illawarra Hawks Form

The Illawarra Hawks are currently third in the NBL Season Ladder with seven wins and six defeats  and a points per game average of 100.97. Because of the addition of the NBL Cup whose games will be added as part of the regular-season, teams will play a total of 36 games, compared to 28 in previous seasons. The top-four teams of the NBL Season Ladder will go through to the playoffs, so for teams like the Hawks there is still everything to play for.

After finishing bottom of the Season Ladder in 2019-20, the Hawks began the 2020-21 season in excellent form, winning their first four games thanks in no small part to the points scoring skills of Tyler Harvey. However in their nine subsequent games, the Hawks record is 3-6, and they have lost three of their last four games, including an 87-70 defeat to the Perth Wildcats on Sunday.

Sydney Kings Form

The Sydney Kings are the best supported team in the NBL, and their Qudos Bank Arena holds 18,200 supporters, almost 4,000 more than the next largest, the RAC Arena, home to the Perth Wildcats. However, as this game is one of those that make up the inaugural NBL Cup, it will be held at the John Cain Arena in Melbourne.

Sydney are currently sixth in the NBL Season Ladder with six wins and seven defeats for a win average of 46.15%.  The Kings started the season with a particularly tough January, losing three of the first four games that month. They turned things around in February however, winning four of their first six matches and climbing out of the bottom-three in the table.

After suffering back-to-back defeats for the first time since January, against Melbourne United and Cairns Taipans, Sydney won their most recent game, defeating Melbourne Phoenix 91-85 on Saturday (March 6).

Verdict

This is a tough match to call; there is one win splitting the Illawarra Hawks and the Sydney Kings this season, neither team have hit top form, and both have lost two of their last three games. Even their recent head-to-head gives little away.

However, Sydney’s last win over the Hawks happened more than a year ago, while Illawarra’s win over the Kings occurred just over a month ago, narrow as it was. That slight advantage plus their superior league ranking gives them a slight edge, and that’s why I’m backing the Hawks to defeat the Kings on Thursday by ten points or less, with a total points of 180 or more.
