Illawarra Hawks vs SE Melbourne Phoenix Tips

For the fourth time this season the South East Melbourne Phoenix and the Illawarra Hawks meet in an NBL regular season match, with this one taking place on Friday April 9.  SE Melbourne are up to third in the NBL Season Ladder - their highest ranking yet in their short history. The Hawks – who were 3rd last time these teams met – have since slipped out of the top-four playoff places for the first time this season, down to sixth.

In their brief two seasons of existence, SE Melbourne have proven to be something of a “bogey team” for the Hawks, and in six NLB regular season matches, the score is 6-0 in SE Melbourne’s favor. Illawarra’s only win of any kind came during the 2020 pre-season warm up games, when the Hawks won their only match 109-98.

Based off the current run of excellent form being enjoyed by SE Melbourne, and the slump that has engulfed the Hawks, I have no choice but to back the Phoenix to make it 4-0 vs Illawarra in 2021. SE Melbourne will win this game comfortably, by between 10 and 15 points.

  • Phoenix 3rd in NBL Season Ladder
  • Phoenix 12-8 this season
  • Hawks 6th in NBL Season Ladder
  • Hawks 10-11 this season

Head to Head

The SE Melbourne Phoenix and the Illawarra Hawks have played each other six times in NBL regular season games, with SE Melbourne leading this head-to-head 6-0. They have played each other three times this season, with the Phoenix winning all three. In their most recent matchup earlier this month (April) SE Melbourne dominated the game 95-63.

Thus far, the only win Illawarra can lay claim to came during the 2020 pre-season warm up games, when the Hawks won their match 109-98. However, that is not recognized as a legitimate win.

SE Melbourne Form

2020 was the very first season in the NBL for the franchise known as the SE Melbourne Phoenix. SE Melbourne did about as well as could be expected in their first ever campaign, finishing 8th, with a 9-19 record. The Phoenix defeated the legendary Perth Wildcats, city rivals Melbourne United and the Illawarra Hawks - three times. Granted, the Hawks would finish bottom of the table last year.

If the Phoenix had had a better start to this season, they would surely be top of the table by now. Instead, they lost four of their first seven games, and were 6-7 and 7th in the table in early March. However, a run of six wins in seven games has powered SE Melbourne into the top-three, now it’s just a question of staying in the top four until the end of the season, and contesting the playoffs.

Illawarra Hawks Form

The Illawarra Hawks are down to 6th in the NBL Season Ladder, with a record of 10 wins and 11 defeats, the first time this season the Hawks have a losing record.  Last season Illawarra finished bottom of the Season Ladder, but this year they have been playing much better, and have beaten the second ranked Melbourne United and the 4th placed Sydney Kings among others.

Which makes their current slump of one win in six games all the more frustrating for both the team and their legion of fans. Worse still, after SE Melbourne the Hawks play the Perth Wildcats, Melbourne United and Sydney kings in succession. Should they lose all of those games, Illawarra could find themselves battling to avoid dropping into the bottom two.

Verdict

The last time these two teams met, the inclusion of Mitch Creek in the SE Melbourne starting lineup was causing major controversy as Creek was on bail after being charged with assault on a woman. In the end, SE Melbourne played a blinder, defeating the Illawarra Hawks by 32 points, with Creek barely featuring in the game.

If the Phoenix could perform that well under such a high level of scrutiny they are a special group of players. I’m backing them to score a fourth win over Illawarra on Friday, this time defeating the Hawks by between 10-15 points.
