Illawarra Hawks vs Perth Wildcats Tips

Two of the biggest names in Australia’s National Basketball League (NBL) go head-to-head when reigning NBL champions the Perth Wildcats play the Illawarra Hawks in a Melbourne Cup/regular-season game on Sunday, March 7.

This will be the first NBL season featuring 36 games, the regular-season having previously comprised 28 games. This is because of the addition of the mid-season “NBL Cup” with all nine teams competing for that trophy, and those games also counting as part of the regular season.

The Perth Wildcats are currently second in the NBL’s Season Ladder (or league table) having played 10 games, with six wins and four defeats. Perth were on a four-game winning streak but lost their most recent game, going down 95-92 to the Brisbane Bullets.

The third-placed Illawarra Hawks have played 12 games this season, with seven wins and five defeats. The Hawks have suffered three defeats in their last four games, but won their most recent match, defeating the Adelaide 36ers 98-89.

I’m backing Perth to defeat Illawarra on Sunday in a close game, the Wildcats winning by ten points or less in a game that will have a combined points total of 220 or under.

  • Hawks are third in Season Ladder
  • Hawks are 7-5 this season
  • Wildcats are second in Season Ladder
  • Wildcats are 6-4 this season

Head to Head

Despite both teams stature in the NBL, the Perth Wildcats and the Illawarra Hawks have played each other only four times, with Perth 3-1 up. Their most recent game took place in January 2020, and on that occasion the Wildcats won convincingly by 22 points, 99-77.

Illawarra Hawks Form

The Illawarra Hawks hail from the city of Wollongong in New South Wales, and are the only team to have played in every NBL season since its inception in 1979. The Hawks won their only NBL championship thus far in 2001, and have since been runners-up three times, in 2005, 2010 in 2017.

Despite a lack of trophies, Illawarra has been a constant force in the league table, and in their last six seasons the Hawks have finished outside of the top-3 in the NBL’s Season Ladder once, topping the table twice.

Currently 3rd-placed in the Season Ladder, Illawarra have played a total of 12 regular-season games, winning seven and losing five for a 58.33% win rate and have an average points per game (PPG) of 102.66. So far, the Hawks have played just three games at home, winning two. On the road Illawarra have carved out a respectable 5-4 record.

Illawarra began the 2020-21 NBL season with four straight wins and topped the Season Ladder, but they have since struggled to find consistency, and the Hawks have lost three of their last four games. However, it’s early days yet, and they still have 24 games to play.

Perth Wildcats Form

Defending NBL champions the Perth Wildcats are the most successful team in NBL history, having won the championship a record 10 times. Perth are the second best supported team in the league (behind the Sydney Kings), and their home stadium, the RAC Arena has a 14,800 capacity.

Currently second in the Season Ladder, the Wildcats have played 10 games, winning six and losing four for a 60% win rate, with an average PPG of 104.89. They have a game in hand over league leaders Melbourne United, the form team by far this season who currently sport a 10-1 record.

Perth are 4-1 in their last five games, although they were beaten on Friday (March 5) by the Brisbane Bullets 95-92.

Verdict

This will be the first meeting in a year between the Hawks and the Wildcats, and there is very little to separate them. What’s more, as this game is part of the NBL Cup, it will be played on neutral ground at the John Caine Arena in Melbourne.

I’m backing Perth’s star player American Bryce Cotton to be the difference in this game. Former NBA player Cotton leads the NBL stats for average PPG with 25.2, and ranks third for assists with an average of 6.7.

I’m picking the Wildcats to defeat the Hawks by a scoreline of less than 10 points, in a game that will feature a combined total of 220 points or less.
