Adelaide were brought back down to earth last weekend with a humiliating 109-82 loss to the NZ Breakers at Spark Arena.
The 36ers went into the weekend on a 2 game win streak having won 5 of their previous 6 games. Adelaide were slightly down on their 3pt percentage on the year while also taking fewer shots from distance than their already league lowest 23.2 per game. That can account for some of the drop off in scoring with Isaac Humphries contributing only 4 points in his 14 minutes of play.
It was the defensive end though that was the struggle for Adelaide against the Breakers. They allowed 54 points in the paint with Parker Jackson-Cartwright connecting on 7 of 12 from 2pt range. Adelaide average only 40.9 points in the paint to their opponents this season but had no answer for their opposing point guard in this match up.
Once again the bench unit failed to produce, contributing only 15 points in the game with a combined -16 player rating. Lat Mayen still has no timeline confirmation in his recovery from a back strain.
Illawarra Hawks Form & Team News
Illawarra were handed their third loss of the season against the Perth Wildcats in stunning fashion last weekend. A 113-105 scoreline was the highest game total of the season so far with Perth matching the 113 that Illawarra themselves had posted earlier in the season against Brisbane.
The Hawks were as usual strong in the Paint, putting up 56 points against the Wildcats but had only 7 Second Chance points in the loss. The 105 points they did score would have won them the majority of NBL games played this year but defensively the Hawks could do nothing to stop the barrage of 3 balls from their opponents who shot 54% from distance.
Essentially it can probably be put down to an opposition shooting anomaly but somewhere in this game there should have been some adjustments in the defensive structures to try and limit the Illawarra opponents from getting so many open looks.
Trey Kell III is still out with a back injury with his timeline yet to be confirmed.
