Toronto Raptors @ LA Clippers Tips

The Toronto Raptors take on the LA Clippers in an inter-conference regular-season NBA matchup on Wednesday, May 5. Both of these teams will be entering into this game with very different mindsets; the Clippers – 4th in the Western Conference - were on the verge of being officially recognized as the best team in the NBA this season, but have now lost their last three matches. Meanwhile the Raptors 11th in the Eastern Conference - have had their spot in the NBA playoffs snatched away from them by a resurgent Washington Wizards, and are now desperate to regain their place.

On Sunday the Clippers were defeated by the Denver Nuggets 110-104, their third consecutive loss. The Raptors however scored a much-needed win on Monday, 121-114 over the defending NBA Champions the LA Lakers, in a game that was especially noteworthy as it marked the return of the Lakers’ no.1 player LeBron James. James had missed the Lakers last 20 games due to injury.

This will be the first meeting between these two teams this season. They last played each other in December 2019, and on that occasion, the LA Clippers were the winners by 112 points to 92. I’m backing the Clippers to win this game also, but not by much; this will be a close, hard-fought match, with LA just edging out Toronto by 10 points or less.

  • Clippers 4th in Western Conference
  • Clippers 43-22 this season
  • Raptors 11th in Eastern Conference
  • Raptors 27-38 this season

Head to Head

Because they compete in different conferences, the Toronto Raptors and the LA Clippers have played each other just 48 times in regular-season NBA games. The Raptors currently lead that head-to-head by 27 wins to 21. In their last six matches dating back over the past three seasons, the Clippers lead 4-2. These teams haven’t played each other since December 2019, and on that occasion the LA Clippers were victorious by 112-92.

LA Clippers Form

Going into their game against the New Orleans Pelicans on April 27, the LA Clippers had lost just once in 11 games, were level on wins with Western Conference rivals the Phoenix Suns, and just a game or two away from overtaking the Utah Jazz and topping the NBA league for the first time in 2021. When the Clippers were then beaten by New Orleans 120-103, fans but it down to complacency on their part. Surely they would be on point for their next game against Phoenix.

On point or not, the Clippers were beaten by the Suns 109-101, and while Phoenix would then defeat Utah in their next match and top the NBA league themselves, the LA Clippers would lose for a third-straight time, going down 110-104 to the Denver Nuggets on Sunday. To put their current position into perspective, the Clippers have only lost three games on the bounce once before this season, and that was two months ago.

Toronto Raptors Form

The Toronto Raptors pretty much had their place in the NBA playoffs sewn up, until the Washington Wizards decided to start winning matches. Since early April, Washington have gone 12-3, including an eight-match winning streak that has seen them leapfrog Toronto and grab 10th spot in the Eastern Conference for themselves.

While Washington have been enjoying their best form of the season, Toronto have suffered their own mini-slump, losing four of their last six matches including three on the trot. The Raptors did however rebound from that three-match losing streak to defeat the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday (May 3) by 121-114. The match marked the return of LeBron James after 20 games, although he was substituted early with “sore ankles.”

Had these two teams played each other a couple of weeks ago when both were winning regularly, it would’ve been all about skill and technique and which were the better team on the night. However, suddenly Wednesday’s game features an LA Clippers desperate to regain the form and confidence they had for most of the season, and a Toronto Raptors side determined to get back in the playoff positions.
I’m backing the LA Clippers to regain the form that had many believing this would finally be the year they won a first ever NBA Championship. The Clippers will win a tense, hard-fought battle by 10 points or less in a matchup that will feature less than 220 points.
