Portland Trail Blazers @ Phoenix Suns Tips

The Portland Trail Blazers travel to Arizona and the Phoenix Suns Arena this Tuesday for an NBA regular season Western Conference game. There is literally just one victory separating fourth placed Phoenix and Portland at fifth in the conference, and both teams come into this game with 8-2 records in their last 10 games.

While their recent head-to-head reveals that Portland have the edge with seven wins in their past nine games since 2018, I’m picking Phoenix to edge this latest encounter by 10 points or less in a game that should total around 230 points or under.

The reasoning behind this prediction is this; Phoenix have won their last two games convincingly, beating New Orleans by 18 points and thrashing Memphis 128-97. Meanwhile, Portland were well beaten last time out by the Washington Wizards 118-111, a team that is struggling near the bottom of the Eastern Conference with nothing to play for. If Portland couldn’t beat Washington, I can’t see them defeating a highly motivated Phoenix team enjoying a great season and motivated to reach the playoffs.

  • Phoenix 3rd in Western Conference
  • Phoenix 8-2 in last ten games
  • Portland 4th in Western Conference
  • Portland 8-2 in last ten games

Head to Head

The Portland Trail Blazers and the Phoenix Suns have played each other 230 times in NBA regular season games. Phoenix lead their head-to-head by 122 wins to 108. However, in the nine games they have played since the start of 2018, Portland have won 7, including the most recent meeting in March of last year that saw the Trail Blazers win by 122-108.

Portland Trail Blazers Form

Portland are currently fifth in the NBA Western Conference, with 18 wins and 11 defeats for a .621 game average. The Trail Blazers are one place below the Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference. Portland are second in the Northwest Division, behind NBA team of the season, the Utah Jazz.

Overall in the NBA league Portland are sixth, and as long as they maintain their current form, should make the playoffs.  Portland’s away record the season is an impressive one, with 10 wins and five defeats.

However on Sunday Portland were surprisingly beaten by the Washington Wizards 118-111, their first defeat in seven games. The result was an upset, as Washington are bottom of their division and third from the bottom of the Eastern Conference with nothing to play for, while the Trail Blazers should be motivated by the possibility of the playoffs.

Phoenix Suns Form

Phoenix are currently fifth in the NBA league, fourth in the Western Conference, and third in the Pacific Division, behind the LA duo of the Clippers and the Lakers. Phoenix have won 19 and lost 10 games this season for a .655 game average. Phoenix have been solid if unspectacular at home this season with 10 wins and five defeats.

The Phoenix Suns are enjoying a great run of form of late, with just one defeat in their last nine games. Outstanding for the Suns during this run have been Devon Booker, Deandre Aikman and Chris Paul to name but three.

Verdict

This is an extremely tough game to call between two teams that are side-by-side in the Western Conference and separated by just one win. While Phoenix have proved to be slightly the better team this season, their recent head-to-head reveals that Portland have won the majority of games between them since 2018.

Both teams are 8-2 in their last 10 games, but while the Trail Blazers have lost two of the last three, the Suns have won their last two outings. What’s more, Portland’s defeat by one of the weakest teams in the NBA this season – the Washington Wizards – reveals underlying motivational issues with the team.

I’m picking Phoenix to defeat Portland on Tuesday in a close encounter by 10 points or less. I’m also picking the points total to be around 230 or less.
