Portland Trail Blazers @ LA Clippers Tips

The Portland Trail Blazers take on the LA Clippers in an NBA Western Conference regular season game on Tuesday, April 6. Both of these teams are having strong seasons so far, with Portland currently 6th in the Western Conference, and LA third.

This will be the second time these two teams have played each other this season; the Clippers won their first meeting back in December 2020 by 128-105, with Kawhi Leonard scoring 28 points for LA. Both of these teams go into Tuesday’s game off the back of victories - Portland defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder 133-85 on Sunday, while on the same day the Clippers beat city rivals the LA Lakers 104-86.

Based off Portland’s less than stellar home record - 15-10 - the exact same stat as the Clippers’ away slate for this season, plus the high that comes with beating old rivals the Lakers, I’m backing LA to defeat the Trail Blazers on Tuesday by less than 10 points in a close, hard fought encounter.

  • Portland 6th in Western Conference
  • Portland 30-19 this season
  • Clippers 3rd in Western Conference
  • Clippers 33-18 this season

Head to Head

The LA Clippers and the Portland Trail Blazers have played each other a total of 229 times, with Portland currently leading their head-to-head by 147 wins to 82. Over the past three seasons, these two teams have played each other eight times, with the Clippers leading 5-3. The Clippers and the Trail Blazers have played each other once this season, with the Clippers winning 128-105 in December.

Portland Trail Blazers Form

Portland are currently third in the Western Conference Northwest Division, behind leaders the Utah Jazz and second placed Denver Nuggets. The Trail Blazers have a record of 30 wins in 19 defeats for a 0.612 win percentage. Portland have been consistent all season, and barring a complete loss of form, look a certainty to make the playoffs.

Portland’s standout players this season include Damian Lillard and Robert Covington. Six-time All-Star Lillard leads the team stats for PPG with 29.6 and assists with 7.7. Covington leads for both steals and blocks. Also impressive is CJ McCollum, who’s been averaging 23.8 points per game. Portland go into Tuesday’s match in excellent form having lost just once in their last six matches.

LA Clippers Form

The LA Clippers are second in the Pacific Division behind only the Phoenix Suns and ahead of city rivals the Los Angeles Lakers. The Clippers have a record of 33 wins against 18 defeats for a win percentage of 0.647. LA have been in good form of late; the Clippers are 7-3 in their last 10 games, and in their most recent outing they defeated their arch rivals the LA Lakers 104-86.

Outstanding for the Clippers this season has been Kawhi Leonard who’s been averaging 25.7 points per game, and also leads the stats for steals. Also impressive is Paul George, averaging 22.2 points per game, and leading for assists with 5.4.

The Clippers had recently won six games on the bounce before losing back-to-back matches to Orlando and Denver last week. However, they bounced back with a huge confidence-building victory over the reigning NBA champs the LA Lakers on Sunday, even if it is the current version of the Lakers minus Anthony Davis and LeBron James.

There is little to separate these two teams; while the Portland Trail Blazers have home advantage, their record at the Motor Center is a less than stellar 15-10, and whatever home support they have will be minimal. Meanwhile, the LA Clippers have a very strong away record of 15-10, plus or on the high that comes with beating the Lakers.
Mainly because of those two factors, I’m backing the Clippers to win a close game on Tuesday, defeating the Trail Blazers by 10 points or less in a matchup that will feature no more than 220 points.
