Phoenix Suns @ LA Lakers Live Stream & Tips

On Tuesday, June 1 the Phoenix Suns play the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 5 of what is shaping up to be the most exciting series of the Western Conference Playoffs First Round. On Sunday Phoenix had to dig deep to level the series at 2-2, and this best-of-seven series could not be more perfectly poised.

Regardless of the fact that the Phoenix Suns were the no.2 seeds and the Lakers were seeded 7th, or that Phoenix had a phenomenal regular season record of 51-21, while the Lakers slate was a mediocre (for them) 42-30, everyone knew that those facts meant little in the cauldron of the NBA Playoffs. The Lakers are the defending NBA Champions, and their players are battle hardened to handle this kind of pressure, while the Phoenix were competing in their first playoffs in a decade.

Phoenix made the perfect start to the series with a 99-90 win over Los Angeles, but the Lakers hit back hard, winning the next two games 109-102, and decisively 109-95, with Anthony Davis hitting 34 points in both. Suddenly the Suns needed a real gut check, as another defeat would have left them on the edge of a precipice with no safety rope. This writer has stated previously that Phoenix have the team to beat the Lakers – and indeed win the championships – but need to believe it.

The Phoenix Suns emerged victorious on Sunday, building up a significant points lead in the second and third quarters, and then surviving a Lakers late surge. I’m backing Phoenix to take back the lead in this series on Tuesday, winning by a similar scoreline as Sunday’s game.

  • Phoenix finished 2nd in Western Conference
  • Phoenix were 48-19 this season
  • Lakers finished 7th in Western Conference
  • Lakers were 37-30 this season

Head to Head

The LA Lakers and the Phoenix Suns have played each other 255 times in regular-season NBA games. The Lakers currently lead that head-to-head by 146 wins to 109. In their ten most recent matches over the past three seasons, the Lakers lead 7-3.

However, in 2021 the score is 2-1 to the Phoenix Suns. Phoenix defeated LA at the start of March by 114-104, and again later that month by 111-94, while the Lakers won their most recent match, defeating Phoenix 123-110 in May. So far in their 2021 NBA Playoffs First Round series the score is two wins each.

Los Angeles Lakers Form

The great thing about the LA Lakers is while they often looked average and even occasionally poor during the regular season, once they hit the playoffs they have displayed an undeniable swagger. Just like soccer giants Real Madrid, no matter how badly they might be performing in La Liga, Real are always among the favourites to win the Champions League, the tournament they’ve won more than anyone else.

Anthony Davis scored 34 points in both of the Lakers wins over the Suns, but Davis is once again out injured. In the two games they lost, LeBron James was their top scorer, with 18 and 25 points, and clearly he is not the force he was earlier in the season. Will losing Davis again prove crucial to the Lakers?

Phoenix Suns Form

In the Phoenix Suns last postseason appearance in the 2010 NBA Playoffs, Phoenix reached the Western Conference Finals before bumping into the LA Lakers. Los Angeles won the first two games but Phoenix rallied to win the next two, bringing the scoreline to 2-2, just as it is right now. On that occasion, the Lakers were too strong and too good, and they took the series 4-2, then went on to defeat the Boston Celtics in the NBA Championship Finals.

This time around, the Lakers are neither too strong nor too good, and what they are trading on is their reputation. If Phoenix play at their best, it will be they who wrap up this series 4-2. With Anthony Davis possibly injured for the rest of the series, and LeBron James still struggling to regain his best form, Phoenix will never have a better opportunity to progress than they have right now.

Verdict

The Phoenix Suns and the LA Lakers are tied at two wins each in this nail-bitingly tense NBA Playoffs First Round series. Phoenix Suns may well be the no.2 seeds and the second best team in the NBA during the regular season; that counts for little when a team inexperienced at this level takes on the greatest of all time.

Phoenix have caught a break with the Lakers losing Anthony Davis. Davis had scored 34 points in each of their wins and will be badly missed. What’s more, the Lakers are now relying on a clearly struggling LeBron James for points.

Because of these factors, I’m backing the Phoenix Suns to make what might be a crucial breakthrough in this series and win the fifth game. Phoenix will edge out the Lakers by ten points or less in a matchup that will total around 210 points.
