Phoenix Suns @ Portland Trail Blazers Tips

The Phoenix Suns take on the Portland Trail Blazers in a Western Conference top-5 clash on Friday, May 14. As the regular-season draws to a close, teams of the caliber of these two who are already guaranteed their places in the playoffs are playing to maintain - or regain - confidence. Right now, with three defeats in their last four matches, Phoenix’ confidence isn’t what it should be, while Portland, with four straight victories under their belt, must be confidently looking forward to the playoffs.

In the opinion of this writer, the Phoenix Suns have been the big story in the NBA this season. Sure, the Lakers have been a car crash and the Jazz have been sublime, but after years of mediocrity, including finishing rock-bottom of the Western Conference in 2016, 2017 and 2018, to topping the overall NBA league is an incredible achievement. Despite their recent defeats, Phoenix are still second the Western Conference, and still have the second best overall record in the NBA – besides that of the Utah Jazz.

The Portland Trail Blazers are fifth in the Western Conference, and could be the “dark horse” going into the NBA playoffs. Portland have timed their run-in to the playoffs to perfection, and their record of 8-2 in their last ten games is the best in the NBA right now, equaled only by Eastern Conference leaders the Philadelphia 76ers.

I’m backing the Portland Trail Blazers to defeat the Phoenix Suns on Friday, based off both teams’ recent records. Portland will win a close match by less than ten points.

  • Phoenix 2nd in Western Conference
  • Phoenix 48-21 this season
  • Portland 5th in Western Conference
  • Portland 40-29 this season

Head to Head

The Portland Trail Blazers and the Phoenix Suns have had a long and extensive rivalry, and these two teams have played each other an impressive 232 times in regular-season NBA games. Phoenix currently lead that head-to-head by 124 wins to 108. In their 13 most recent matches over the past four seasons, Portland lead 9-4. These two teams have played each other twice in 2021, with Phoenix winning both. In their most recent matchup in March, the Suns won a close encounter by 127-121.

Phoenix Suns Form

Despite losing their last two matches, the Phoenix Suns are still like second in both the Western Conference and the overall NBA League, behind only the Utah Jazz. With just three regular-season games left to play, Phoenix are 48-21 with a win percentage of 0.696. However, it’s clear after almost 72 games that many of the players’ nerves are shredded. That’s surely why on Monday they were beaten by the LA Lakers 123-110. While normally there would be no disgrace in losing to the Lakers, the current LA team have become the whipping boy of the NBA of late, and were 2-8 going into the match with Phoenix.

Two days later on Wednesday, the Phoenix Suns were again beaten, this time by the Golden State Warriors 122-116. At this stage of the season, a team like Golden State have more to play for, as a unlike Phoenix who are guaranteed to be seeded in the playoffs, the Warriors are battling to secure their place in the postseason. The concern now is that should Phoenix keep losing these last conference matches, they will go into the playoffs with a negative mindset and lacking in confidence.

Portland Trail Blazers Form

Sometimes sporting success can be down to momentum, and the Portland Trail Blazers could not have planned their current 8-1 winning run any better had it been scripted. Portland have now won their last four matches, and a reflection of their confidence came against the Houston Rockets on Tuesday. Even though Houston racked up an impressive 129 points, Portland hit back with 140 of their own in a match that featured just one point shy of 270 points.

Outstanding for Portland in that match - as he has been all season - was Damian Lillard. Although the 6’2” 195 lb Lillard is one of the smaller players in the NBA, he is a six-time NBA All-Star pick, and since being selected by Portland in 2012, Lillard has been the heartbeat of the team. Lillard leads Portland’s team stats this season for both PPG (28.7) and assists, with 7.6. Lillard has been Portland’s leading scorer in all four of their recent wins, and hit 34 points during Tuesday’s win over Houston.

Verdict

For most of the season, the Phoenix Suns appeared almost impervious to the chaos all around them. While other teams in the Western Conference such as the LA Lakers would lurch from one crisis to another, the Suns were resolute, winning the vast majority of their matches, and bouncing back immediately on the rare occasion they were beaten.

However, as the regular-season draws to a close, so Phoenix have uncharacteristically started losing matches they normally would have won, and have now lost three of their last four. Meanwhile, the Portland Trail Blazers have hit top form at the perfect moment, losing just one of their last nine matches and go into Friday’s game off the back of four straight victories.

I’m backing Portland to continue their winning run at the expense of Phoenix. I’m predicting the Trail Blazers will win this match by 10 points or less, in a game that will feature around 220 points.
