Phoenix Suns @ LA Lakers Tips

The Phoenix Suns take on the LA Lakers in a Western Conference heavyweight clash on Sunday, May 9. However, while Phoenix represents a hungry title contender, currently the Lakers are like a champion on the way out, reeling on the ropes, waiting for someone to land that knockout blow. These two teams have met twice before in 2021, and the Suns are 2-0 up.

Much has been made of the Lakers’ very public fall from grace; from starting the season as reigning champions and looking great early on, there soon began a steady decline, and that became a rapid decline when LeBron James became injured. Although James is back, the Lakers are still a shambles, and have won only two of their last ten games.

Meanwhile, the Phoenix Suns have been a revelation this season. After years of Western Conference mediocrity, including finishing rock-bottom in 2016, 2017 and 2018, and improving slightly to tenth last year, last week they topped the overall NBA league, and are currently second behind the Utah Jazz.

I’m backing the Phoenix Suns to add to the LA Lakers worries by handing them yet another defeat on Sunday. Phoenix should finish comfortable winners by at least ten points in a matchup that will feature around 220 points.

  • Phoenix 2nd in Western Conference
  • Phoenix 48-19 this season
  • Lakers 7th in Western Conference
  • Lakers 37-30 this season

Head to Head

The LA Lakers and the Phoenix have played each other 254 times in regular-season NBA games. The Lakers currently lead that head-to-head by 145 wins to 109. In their nine most recent matches over the past three seasons, the Lakers lead 6-3. However, in 2021 the score is 2-0 to the Phoenix Suns. Phoenix defeated LA at the start of March by 114-104, and again later that month by 111-94.

Los Angeles Lakers Form

Last season, the LA Lakers were crowned NBA Champions for the 17th time, equalling the record set by the Boston Celtics. With the world’s number one player among their ranks in LeBron James as well as other top players including Anthony Davis, the Lakers were favourites to retain their title and began the season playing accordingly.
However, it wouldn’t be long before they started losing games they should have won, and performing less consistently than teams like the Utah Jazz, the Philadelphia 76ers, the LA Clippers and Sunday’s opponents the Phoenix Suns.

Then disaster struck and both James and Davis were sidelined through injury. After missing 20 matches, James returned last week, but looks far from his best. The Lakers have dropped from second in the Western Conference to seventh, and are now in real danger of missing the playoffs altogether. On Friday (May 8) the Lakers were defeated by the Portland Trail Blazers 106-101, their fifth defeat in their last six games, taking their overall record for this season to 37-30.

Phoenix Suns Form

You have to hand it to the Utah Jazz - when the Phoenix Suns finally overtook them at the top of the Western Conference and also the NBA League, it should’ve taken the wind out of their sails. After all, Utah have been holding Phoenix at bay in second place for the best part of two months, and then just over a week ago, results went the right way for Phoenix and they literally had their moment in the Sun.

However, on Thursday Phoenix lost to Atlanta 135-103, their first defeat in seven games, and Utah were ready to take back top-spot, at least for now. Both Phoenix and Utah have five regular season games left to play, and its more than likely one of those two will finish the season top of the Western Conference, although the LA Clippers are still in the running. On Friday the Suns were back in the “Win” column with a 128-105 victory over the New York Knicks.

Where can I watch a Phoenix Suns @ LA Lakers live stream?

Our live streaming calendar shows you where you can watch a Phoenix Suns @ LA Lakers live stream

Last season the LA Lakers won their 17th NBA Championships, while the Phoenix Suns only finished tenth in the Western Conference. Fast-forward to now, and the Lakers are a team in freefall, easy meat for any decent team, while Phoenix have the second best regular season record in the NBA.
I’m backing Phoenix to make it 3-0 this season over the Lakers with a commanding win on Sunday. The Suns should take this match by at least ten points, and overall this game will feature around 220 points.
