Phoenix Suns @ Houston Rockets Tips

The high-flying Phoenix Suns take on the struggling Houston Rockets in an NBA Western Conference regular-season game on Monday, April 5. The Phoenix Suns have been the second best team in the NBA for more than a month now, trailing only the Utah Jazz in terms of games won vs games lost. Phoenix are currently on a five-match winning streak.

At the start of February, the Houston Rockets record was a respectable 11-10. Since then however, Houston have gone into freefall, winning just two of their last 26 matches, including losing their last four.  The Suns and the Rockets have played each other once previously this season, back in January, and on that occasion Phoenix were the victors 109-103.

I’m backing Phoenix to defeat Houston once again, but this time by a far more convincing score line, with them winning by a margin of at least 15 points, in a match that will feature a combined total of over 230 points.

  • Phoenix 2nd in Western Conference
  • Phoenix 34-14 this season
  • Houston bottom of Western Conference
  • Houston 13-36 this season

Head to Head

The Phoenix Suns and the Houston Rockets have played each other a total of 217 times in NBA regular-season games. The Phoenix Suns currently lead that head-to-head by the slightest of margins, 109 wins to 108. In the seven matches these teams have played since the start of 2019, Houston lead 5-2. In their most recent meeting in February 2021, the Phoenix Suns won by 109-103.

Phoenix Suns Form

As previously detailed by this writer, few could have foreseen the rise of the Phoenix at the end of January, when their record was a mediocre 8-8. Since then, the Suns have been relentlessly consistent, and have gone 26-6 in their subsequent 32 matches. Along with the Utah Jazz, Philadelphia 76ers and the Brooklyn Nets, Phoenix have been one of the standout teams in the NBA this season.

Phoenix are currently enjoying a five match winning streak, and their current form was exemplified by their most recent performance, obliterating the Oklahoma City thunder 140-103 on Saturday (April 3). 24-year old Devin Booker score 34 points for the Suns, and he has been their top points’ scorer this season.

Houston Rockets

It might be something of a cliché, but the legendary line “Houston we have a problem” certainly applies to the current predicament of the Rockets. After a sequence of just one loss in eight games from late January to early February, Houston proceeded to lose 20 consecutive matches. The shocker is that the Rockets have finished top of the Southwest Division four times since 2015, including last season.

Houston are currently on a four match losing streak, and on Sunday (April 4) they were beaten by the New Orleans Pelicans 122-115 to take their slate for the season to 13-36, the second worst record in the NBA right now. The last time the Rockets won a game was against the worst team in the league, the Minnesota Timberwolves two weeks ago.

Verdict

It's amazing to think that at this time last season the Houston Rockets were one of the best teams in the Western Conference, and headed for the playoffs, something the Phoenix Suns would fail to achieve.

Based off the form of these two teams going in to Monday’s game, it’s not so much a question of ‘if` the Suns will defeat the Rockets, but by how wide a margin. I’m backing Phoenix to win this game by at least 15 points in a match that will feature more than 230 points in total.
