Oklahoma City Thunder @ San Antonio Spurs Tips

After the conclusion of Friday’s fixtures, the NBA takes a week-long break while it plays its All-Star game. One of those fixtures sees two teams from the Western Conference go head-to-head when Southwest Division leaders the San Antonio Spurs entertain the Oklahoma City Thunder from the Northwest Division in a regular-season game on Friday, March 5.

This will be the third time these two teams have played each other this season. San Antonio defeated Oklahoma 112-102 back in January, the Thunder squeaked past the Spurs 102-99 when they faced each other in late February.

Overall, San Antonio have proven the more consistent of the two, and are currently sixth in the Western Conference and heading for a playoff place. Oklahoma City however have struggled to find any kind of consistency, and are currently fourth from bottom of the Western Conference.

With one win apiece, this is a tough game to call. However, based off overall performance I’m backing the form team to win this fixture and picking San Antonio to defeat Oklahoma by 10 points or less in a game that will feature a total points of less than 220.

  • San Antonio top of Southwest Divsion
  • San Antonio 17-13 this season
  • Oklahoma 4th in Northwest Divsion
  • Oklahoma 14-21 this season

Head to Head

The Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs have played each other a total of 176 times  in NBA regular season games. Currently, San Antonio leads their head-to-head by 97 wins to 79. In the nine matches they have played since the start of 2019, the Spurs lead 5-4.

Their most recent match recent match took place on February 24 this season, and Oklahoma City Thunder won an ultra-close match by 102-99.

Oklahoma City Thunder Form

Oklahoma City have played 35 NBA regular season games so far this season, with 14 wins and 21 defeats for a win percentage of 0.400. In their last 10 games they are 4-6, and are currently on a two game losing streak.

The Thunder are currently fourth in the Western conference Northwest Division, which is topped by the NBA team of the season so far, the Utah Jazz. Second in the division and also headed for the playoffs are the Portland Trail Blazers. The frustrating thing for fans of Oklahoma City must be that they can win games and have beaten good teams like Portland, Phoenix and San Antonio this season, and only lost to Utah by a point.

The problem with the Thunder has been a complete lack of consistency, and an inability to string more than two wins together, a feat they achieved just once all season back in January. Oklahoma have been relying on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for their points, and he has an average of just 22.9 this season, although overall he has been solid for the team, with high stats for rebounds and assists.

San Antonio Spurs Form

The San Antonio Spurs have played 31 games this season, with 18 wins and 13 defeats for a 0.581 win percentage. The Spurs are currently top of their Southwest Division and sixth in the Western Conference, and well on track for a post-season playoff spot.

One of the great teams in the NBA, San Antonio are five-time NBA Championship winners, most recently in 2014, and their last divisional title came in 2017. They have a great shot at winning the Southwest Division this season, but face stiff competition from the Dallas Mavericks and the Memphis Grizzlies.

San Antonio have been in good form of late, with 7 wins and 3 defeats in their last 10 games. In their most recent match on Wednesday (March 3) they defeated the New York Knicks 119-93. The Spurs are desperately in need of a quality points scorer, and this season DeMar DeRozan tops their stats with a paltry 20 PPG average.

This will be the third meeting between San Antonio and Oklahoma this season, and with one win each there’s not much splitting these two teams. Concerning is Spurs weak home record of 9 wins and 9 defeats. However, that stat is cancelled out by the equally poor away record of Oklahoma City, with 8 wins and 10 defeats.
Therefore I’m going with overall performance and consistency and choosing the form team in this fixture, and I’m backing San Antonio to win a fairly close game by 10 points or less, in a match that will feature a total points of less than 220.
