NBA 2024 Play-In Tournament Preview

The NBA Regular season has come to an end and what a wild finish it was. The last two days of games brought about some upsets and some drubbings which saw teams move around the seedings either ending up in the Play-In or in the comfort of a top 6 placing.

Western Conference

In the Western Conference the Sacramento Kings could not avoid finishing in the elimination game despite a last day win against the Trailblazers. They will now host the Golden State Warriors who many believe will blow their roster up at the completion of this season with the original trio of Steph Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson all showing signs of aging. The big question is whether the Warriors will have what it takes to climb the mountain one last time.

In the 7th vs 8th game the LA Lakers will travel to New Orleans to take on the Pelicans. The loser of this game will get a second chance against either the Warriors or the Kings but both teams will be eager to wrap things up straight away and not give fate a chance. The Lakers have been showing good form of late and won 3 of the 4 games against the Pelicans through the regular season.

Eastern Conference

In the Eastern Conference the elimination game opponents had been set for a while and it is the Chicago Bulls who will host the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday (Australian time). Both of these teams have had underwhelming seasons with injuries and trade rumours severely hampering team spirit and motivation. The outlook is bleak too with the winner having to then go through Philly/Miami and then Boston to even get to the 2nd round. Stranger things have happened but the odds are not in their favour.

The Play-In game for the 7th seed could possibly be the matchup of the tournament with the Philadelphia 76ers hosting the Miami Heat. Philly were top 4 for the majority of the season but took a freefall down the standings when star player Joel Embiid went down with a severe injury. Now that he is back and refreshed from his stint on the sidelines the talk around Philly being a contender is growing. They will though need to overcome the Heat first and we all know that Play-Off Jimmy is a different beast. Like last season the Heat have done just enough to be in the conversation and their roster has the talent if they can just spend enough minutes on the floor together. This game is bound to be close and could possibly set the tone of what is to come in the Play-Offs proper.

Golden State Warriors
Philadelphia 76ers
Atlanta Hawks

We are going with an underdog and a favourite in each conference, backing in recent form and head to head trends. LA have dominated New Orleans this season and will get on top using their experience in this setting to win. The wind has gone out of the sails of the Kings and we know that Steph is a bucket. Warriors in a close one. Joel Embiid has been mega in his games since returning from injury, expect him to go big and seal the deal for the 76ers. Atlanta love coming to spoil the party, Trey Young will give a final shot at taking the Hawks to the promised land before finding a new home this summer.

LA Lakers vs New Orleans Pelicans: Under 226pts - $1.90 at Boombet

3 of the 4 games between these two teams went over the total this regular season but the Play-Offs or more specifically the Play-In is a different kettle of fish. Defence becomes more important and you can expect the Lakers to start playing from the first whistle, not just late in the 3rd quarter.

Something to have an extra sprinkle on..

Philadelphia 76ers vs Miami Heat: Tied at end of regulation - Yes - $12.00 at Bet365

The 76ers and Heat are two teams that are very closely matched. When the game comes down to the wire expect the stars to bust out and keep the hope alive.
