Minnesota Timberwolves @ Utah Jazz Tips

The Minnesota Timberwolves take on the Utah Jazz in an NBA Western Conference regular season game on Sunday, April 25. This will be the first of two consecutive matches between the Timberwolves and the Jazz, with the second game taking place next Tuesday. Minnesota are currently 14th in the Western Conference, while Utah have topped the WC table all season.

This will be the second game of the season featuring the Timberwolves and the Jazz. In their second match of the current campaign back in December, Utah suffered a rare defeat, going down 116-111 against Minnesota. The Jazz would however soon top the Western Conference table and subsequently prove themselves to be the best team overall in the NBA this season. By comparison the Timberwolves have spent their season in the lower regions of the Western Conference.

Going into this game, Minnesota suffered a narrow loss to the Sacramento Kings 128-125 while Utah defeated the Houston Rockets 112-89, with both matches taking place on Thursday. I’m backing the Utah Jazz to defeat the Minnesota Timberwolves by at least 10 points on Saturday in a match that will feature around 220 points in total.

  • Timberwolves 14th in Western Conference
  • Timberwolves 16-44 this season
  • Jazz top of Western Conference
  • Jazz 44-15 this season

Head to Head

The Minnesota Timberwolves and the Utah have played each other 128 times in regular-season NBA games. The Jazz currently lead this head-to-head by 85 wins to 43. In their last eight encounters over the past two seasons plus the current one, Utah lead 5-3. In their most recent meeting in December 2020, Minnesota were victorious 116-111.

Minnesota Timberwolves Form

The Minnesota Timberwolves have won 16 and lost 44 games this season for a win percentage of 0.267, the second lowest in the NBA, above only the Houston Rockets. Minnesota are currently 14th in the Western Conference, with Houston below them in 15th. Ironically, the Timberwolves began their season with back-to-back victories over the Detroit Pistons and the Utah Jazz, before suffering seven consecutive defeats, which set the tone for their season.

Interestingly, Minnesota have actually won two of their last four matches, defeating the Miami Heat last week before losing to the LA Clippers, and most recently defeating the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday 134-120, before losing the rematch to Sacramento the following day 128-125. In those two matches, the Timberwolves showed plenty of fighting spirit, with Anthony Edwards and Karl Anthony Towns both outstanding for Minnesota in both of those games.

Utah Jazz Form

The Utah Jazz have been the outstanding team in the NBA this season, and are favourites to win their first ever NBA Championship this season. If the competition was based off a league format like the English Premier League Spain’s La Liga, the Jazz would soon be crowned champions. However, with the US system of a league format welded to a knockout competition climaxing with a cup final, Utah’s work is far from done.

The Jazz have certainly done all they can so far, and their consistency this season has been phenomenal. They have won 44 games and lost just 15 for a win percentage of 0.746. Utah top the Western Conference, and are also well clear at the top of the NBA league, with two wins more and two defeats less than the second placed Phoenix Suns. The Jazz have won their last two games, defeating the LA Lakers 111-97 on Tuesday, and beating the Houston Rockets 112-89 on Thursday.

The Minnesota Timberwolves proved in their most recent two games - winning and losing against the Sacramento Kings - that they are a better team than their results and current position in the Western Conference would suggest. It should also be remembered that at the start of this season, Minnesota actually defeated the Utah Jazz.

That said, the chances of that happening again are slim, and I’m backing the Jazz to dominate this game, winning by a margin of more than 10 points in a matchup that will feature around 220 points in total.
