Miami Heat @ Denver Nuggets Tips

The Miami Heat take on the Denver Nuggets in an NBA cross-conference regular-season game on Thursday, April 15. This will be the second time these two teams have faced each other in 2021; back in January Denver defeated Miami 109-82. Because Miami and Denver play their basketball in separate conferences, matches between them something of a rarity, and this will be only their sixth meeting in three seasons.

Both of these teams are in similar positions in their respective conferences; Miami are fifth in the Eastern Conference with 28 wins and 25 defeats, while Denver are fourth in the Western Conference with a 34-20 record. However, the Heat go into this game off the back of two straight wins, while the reverse is true for the Nuggets, who have lost their last two games.

Based purely off both teams’ most recent results, I’m backing the Miami Heat to defeat the Denver Nuggets by 10 points or less in a hard-fought game that will feature around 220 points in total.

  • Miami 5th in Eastern Conference
  • Miami 28-25 this season
  • Denver 4th in Western Conference
  • Denver 34-20 this season

Head to Head

The Miami Heat and the Denver Nuggets have played each other a total of 67 times, with Miami currently just edging their head-to-head 34-33. Because they play their basketball in separate conferences, Miami and Denver have only faced each other five times during the past three seasons, with the Nuggets leading 4-1. In their most recent matchup in January of this year, Denver were victorious by 109-82.

Miami Heat Form

The Miami Heat are currently second in the Eastern Conference Southeast Division behind Atlanta Hawks. Miami have a record of 28 wins and 25 defeats for a 0.528 win percentage. In their last 10 games Miami have a 6-4 record, and have won their last two matches, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday (April 9) and on Monday they defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 107-90.

A large part of Miami’s success this season is down to Jimmy Butler, who leads the team stats for points per game (21.5) assists (7.1) and steals. Also outstanding for the Heat has been Bam Adebayo, with a points average per game of 19.1, who leads for rebounds (9.4) as well as blocks. Right now Miami are in great shape one defeat in their last seven matches.

Denver Nuggets Form

The Denver Nuggets are currently second in the Western Conference Northwest Division behind the Utah Jazz. Denver have a record of 34 wins and 20 defeats for a 0.630 in percentage. While the Nuggets have lost their last two – going down against the Boston Celtics 105-87 last Sunday, and on Tuesday losing to the Golden State Warriors 116-117 - they had previously won eight matches on the bounce.

Outstanding for Denver in 2021 has been their young Serbian star Nikola Jokic. Like Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks, Jokic is a highly talented young Eastern European giant, who is proving to be just as physically gifted  and skilful as the best US prospects. Jokic leads the team stats at Denver for points per game (26.2), rebounds (10.9), assists (8.8) and steals.

Prior to their last two defeats, Denver had won eight consecutive matches, including wins over the Philadelphia 76ers and the LA Clippers. Miami go into this game in good shape also, having lost just one of their last seven games, including wins over the New York Knicks, the LA Lakers and the Portland Trail Blazers.
This is an extremely tough match to call, but based off both teams recent form, especially with Denver losing their last two games and Miami winning theirs, I’m going to back the Miami Heat to defeat the Denver Nuggets by 10 points or less in a hard-fought game that will feature around 220 points.
