Memphis Grizzlies @ Utah Jazz Live Stream & Tips

The Memphis Grizzlies take on the Utah Jazz in the second game of their Western Conference Playoffs first round series on Wednesday, May 26. On Sunday Memphis pulled off something of an upset by defeating Utah 112-109 to take the opening game in this best-of-seven series. Utah are the top seeds in the Western Conference Playoffs, while Memphis are seeded eighth.

Utah dominated the Western Conference during the regular season, and they also topped the overall NBA League, which features all of the teams from both the Western and Eastern Conferences. The Jazz finished the regular season with a 52-20 record, the best in the NBA for 2021.

The Grizzlies finished eighth in the Western Conference which normally would have been enough to put them straight through to the playoffs, but this season they had to play two additional Play-in games. Memphis won the first against San Antonio Spurs 100-96, and then qualified for the playoffs with a 117-112 win over the Golden State Warriors. Those two wins probably gave Memphis the sharpness and confidence that carried them to victory over Utah on Sunday.

Nevertheless, I’m backing the Jazz to defeat the Grizzlies on Wednesday and level the series at one win each. Utah will carry on where they left off in last Sunday’s game, when despite losing the match, they closed the show with a 35-point flourish. The Jazz will win this game by 10 points or less in a matchup that will feature no more than 220 points.

  • Utah finished top of Western Conference
  • Utah 52-20 this season
  • Grizzlies 8th in Western Conference
  • Grizzlies 38-34 this season

Head to Head

The Memphis Grizzlies and the Utah Jazz have played each other 95 times in regular-season NBA games, with the Jazz currently leading their head-to-head by 62 wins to 33. In their 11 most recent matches over the past three seasons, Utah lead Memphis 7-4. At the start of 2021 their recent head to head was 4-4, but Utah have won all three of their fixtures this season, most recently a 111-107 win in March.

It was therefore something of an upset when Memphis defeated Utah in their opening playoff fixture 112-109 on Sunday.

Utah Jazz Form

After dominating the Western Conference all season, the Utah Jazz suffered a minor blip in late-April, losing 3 out of 4 games for the first time. However, Utah showed their class by regaining their form immediately, going 7-3 in their final 10 games, and finishing with a 52-20 record – the best in the NBA. Included in those wins were three over the Memphis Grizzlies.

Despite their 3-0 domination of the Grizzlies and superb regular season record, it was Memphis who drew first blood in the first game of their opening round playoff series. Utah started well, and were seven points up after the first quarter. However the Grizzlies hit straight back, scoring a total of 66 points in the second and third quarters and taking a nine-point lead into the final stanza. The Jazz came on strong in the final quarter, scoring 35 points but it wasn’t enough as Memphis hung on for a 112-109 win.

Memphis Grizzlies Form

The Memphis Grizzlies finished the regular season with a 38-34 record, which earned them the eighth spot in the Western Conference, and second behind the Dallas Mavericks in the WC Southwestern Division. In order to reach the playoffs, Memphis had to compete in the Play-in round featuring the teams that finished 7-10. They won their first Play-in game against San Antonio 100-96, and became the playoffs’ eighth seeds with a 117-112 win over Golden State.

The Utah Jazz were 3-0 against the Grizzlies during the regular season, but Memphis defeated the Jazz in their opening playoff fixture 112-109. There’s little doubt those wins over the Spurs and the Warriors during the Play-in round kept Memphis sharp and gave them a much-needed boost of confidence.

Verdict

The opening playoff game between the Memphis Grizzlies and the Utah Jazz was a minor classic, with Utah starting like the favourites they were, the Grizzlies storming back to dominate much of the match, and then the Jazz staging a late rally that almost came off. In the end however, the Grizzlies just edged it 112-109.

During that final quarter Utah scored 35 points and began playing like the team that dominated the NBA during the regular season. I’m backing Utah to pick up where they left off and defeat Memphis on Wednesday, winning by a ten-points-or-less margin in a matchup that will feature no more than 220 points.
