Los Angeles Lakers @ Sacramento Kings Tips

It will be an all-Californian matchup with recent history when the LA Lakers take on the Sacramento Kings in a Pacific Division NBA regular season game on Thursday, March 4. This will be the first time the Lakers and the Kings have met this season; the last time these two teams played each other was in August 2020, and on that occasion a struggling Sacramento defeated a high-flying Lakers team destined to win the NBA championship by 136-122.

The big question is, can the Sacramento Kings repeat that victory? After all, both teams were in a similar position last season; the Lakers were top of the Pacific Division and headed for the play-offs and eventually the Larry O’Brien trophy, while the Kings were on their way to a second from bottom finish.

If the Lakers had defeated the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday, I’d have backed them to beat Sacramento also. But they didn’t, instead going down 114-104. Because of that result, Los Angeles are ripe for the taking, and I’m backing the Kings to make history repeat itself.

  • Lakers top of Pacific Division
  • Lakers current NBA Champions
  • Kings bottom of Pacific Division
  • Kings 13-21 this season

Head to Head

The LA Lakers and the Sacramento Kings have played each other 434 times in regular-season NBA games. The Lakers currently lead their head-to-head by 277 wins to 157. In 10 matches since the start of the 2018 season, the Lakers have won 7 and the Kings three. However in their most recent meeting in August 2020, Sacramento grabbed a rare win 136-122.

LA Lakers Form

The Lakers have won 24 games and lost 11 for a 0.686 win percentage. They are currently top the Pacific Division, ahead of city rivals the Clippers, but still second in the Western Conference behind the best team in the NBA this season, the Utah Jazz.

The Lakers came into this season as the defending NBA champions, and had it not been for the outstanding form of the Jazz, the Lakers would have still be rated the best team in the league, and favourites to retain their title. However, because of their occasional loss of form this season and star player LeBron James struggling with his own game, many would now back Utah or even Phoenix ahead of the Lakers to go all way.

Going into their game and Tuesday against the Phoenix Suns, the Lakers were only 5-5 in their previous 10 games but had won their last two. Phoenix were in great form, with 9 wins from their last 11 games, and their obvious confidence showed on the night, as they defeated the Lakers 114-104, looking the better team throughout the game.

Sacramento Kings Form

With 13 wins and 21 defeats, the Sacramento Kings are currently bottom of the Pacific Division, and third from bottom of the Western Conference, above only Houston Rockets in the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Sacramento have won just one of their last 10 games, and were beaten once again in their most recent fixture on Monday, March 1, going down by a single point to the Charlotte Hornets 127-126. Clearly not even Lady luck is on Sacramento side right now!

The Kings have nothing much to play for except pride this season, and a win over the Lakers right now would be like winning a trophy. Sacramento know that the last time they played the Lakers in August 2020, they were in a similar position to where they are now, yet they did in fact win by 14 points, the game finishing 136-122 to the Kings.

Verdict

The realization that yet another team could be better than them must be a major blow to the egos of the big players at the LA Lakers, but there was no getting away from the fact that they were well beaten by the Phoenix Suns.

Right now, many of those Lakers players would surely rather be anywhere but back on a basketball court, trying to get themselves motivated to take on a team so far down the Western Conference they shouldn’t be sharing that court with them.

And it's precisely for that reason that I believe that backing the Sacramento Kings to pull off the upset and defeat the Lakers is worth a cheeky bet. Just to cover myself, I’m betting on the scoreline to be separated by 10 points or less either way, and the combined total points of the game to be 220 or under.
