Los Angeles Lakers @ Miami Heat Tips

Two of the most illustrious names in the NBA face-off when the Los Angeles Lakers take on the Miami Heat in an inter-conference regular season game on Thursday, March 8. This will be the second time the Lakers and the Heat have played each other this season – back in February, the Heat just squeaked past the Lakers by a 96-94 scoreline. Because these two teams compete in different conferences, it was only the fifth time they have met in the past three seasons.

Los Angeles will go into Thursday’s game vs Miami minus the injured duo of LeBron James and Anthony Davis. The Lakers have badly missed what are in essence their two best players, and have lost six of the 10 matches they’ve played without them. That said, they will go into Thursday’s match off the back of a victory, having beaten Toronto 110-101 on Wednesday (April 7).

I’m backing the LA Lakers to defeat the Miami Heat in a close, hard-fought game by less than ten points. The Lakers have won four of their last six games, while the Heat tend to struggle when they step up in class.

  • Lakers 3rd in WC Pacific Division
  • Lakers 32-19 this season
  • Heat 3rd in EC Southeast Division
  • Heat 26-25 this season

Head to Head

Because they compete in separate conferences, and because the team from Florida was only founded in 1988, historically the LA Lakers and the Miami Heat have played each other just 65 times in regular-season NBA games. The Lakers currently lead that head-to-head by 37 wins to 28.

In the five matches they have played over the past three seasons (including the current one), the Lakers lead 4-1. In their most recent meeting in February of this year, Miami squeaked past Los Angeles 96-94.

LA Lakers Form

The Lakers were crowned NBA Champions for the 17th time last season, and started this year favourites to retain their title. However, even before they lost Anthony Davis and LeBron James through injuries, the Lakers had suffered from stretches of inconsistency, probably due to the erratic form of James himself. For example, from mid-February to early-March, the Lakers won just two of the eight games they played.

Since James has been missing from the team, the Lakers have lacked a big-time points’ scorer. In the 10 games Los Angeles have played since Davis and James were injured, only Kyle Kuzma has scored 30 points in a game, and that was just the one time, in Saturday’s win over the Sacramento Kings. The Lakers may have won against Toronto on Wednesday, but their top scorer – Talen Horton-Tucker - scored only 17 points.

Miami Heat Form

Most Australian casual basketball fans only really became aware of the Miami Heat when the Heat became the hottest (pun intended) team in the NBA in 2006. That was due to two factors: They’d won their first championship, and that Shaquille O’Neal was their star player. Powered by Shaq’s huge size (7’1”, 325 lbs)  and even bigger persona, the Miami Heat became as well known as the Lakers, the Celtics and even the Chicago Bulls at that time.

Of course, when they signed LeBron James in 2010, the Heat took things to a whole other level that led to them winning multiple divisional and conference titles, and two more NBA championships. What’s more during his tenure at the Heat, LeBron became the global superstar he is today.

The current Miami Heat team lacks a star of the calibre of a Shaquille O’Neal or a LeBron James, and right now their best player is Jimmy Butler, a 5-time All-Star, and solid team player. Butler leads the team stats for PPG (21.4) and assists (7.2) as well as steals, while Bam Adebayo is their no.1 when it comes to rebounds and blocks. Miami are 4-1 in their last five games, but were beaten last time out on Wednesday by the Memphis Grizzlies 124-112.

Verdict

When LeBron James and Anthony Davis were forced to leave the Lakers through injury in March, the team promptly lost four consecutive matches. However, since then Lakers have adapted to the loss of their two best players and have won four of their last six games.

The Miami Heat have won four of their last five games, but seem to lose every time they step up in class. Because of that, and the Lakers current improved form, I’m backing Los Angeles to defeat Miami on Thursday in a close game. The Lakers will defeat the Heat by 10 points or less, in a matchup that will total no more than 220 points.
